@_elena@lightweight@robin yep, self-hosting is really cool! We did that for Snipette; got a VPS with #YunoHost and put our #Ghost, #Mattermost, #NextCloud, #GoatCounter, everything on that. Really saved costs compared to renting each service separately, and I got to learn a lot of sysadmin too 😁 (okay maybe that's not an advantage for everyone haha)
@gombang@liztai nice! My experience with Huawei has been mainly in the "tools to connect wirelessly to the Internet" department but I should check out their other stuff as well
@liztai nice! Yeah I can see how it'd catch on in places that don't blindly think "US good, China bad" or something along those lines. And from what hardware I've used, they certainly know their job 🔧
The Indian government right now is going through a very "China bad" phase, so I think I'll be seeing less Huawei products around, but who knows, that stuff is mostly for show anyway 🫠
@liztai Huawei! I know that company because it was the one providing equipment for WLL phones in India. Been using it for connectivity gadgets here and there ever since ☎️
(That stands for "Wireless Local Loop", and it was basically like landlines, but using an antenna and towers for the last mile broadcast, designed for sparsely populated rural areas where it would be too expensive to lay cables all the way. Our first one look like the attached picture that I found online but is in the process of disappearing)
@tommertron@liztai oh nice! I’m lucky not to have much junk coming in (also I use SimpleLogin) but this could be useful someday. The best part is they’re legally obligated to have the “unsubscribe” option, and even if they ignore that, the draconian filters of Big Email (Google, Microsoft, etc) means people still follow the rules ☑️
@liztai not zero exactly, but I tried to emulate Hey’s model of “Inbox, At Hand, Feed, Paper Trail”. Of course it’s manual sorting because I’m not rich enough to subscribe to Hey, but the model does work. I’m at maybe 10ish emails in Inbox + At Hand right now, partly because my daily routine is to run through new emails with the “delete” button 😅
@liztai the annoying this is that all the problems with TikTok (besides maybe the "security risk" stuff, idk about that) are true—but they're also true for most *other* large social media platforms, and nothing remotely like this is being done to them 🧐
There's the argument that "well, we've got to start somewhere", but somehow I don't get the feeling other companies like Meta and Google are going to face the same scrutiny. Anyway the focus is so much on Tiktok that nobody's even bothering to argue that "well, we've got to start somewhere" lol
@liztai I use Kagi! Still on the free trial though, and I've been using it minimally, not for mindless searches, so as to extend that 😅
I don't like their whole "AI everything" approach, but my motivations for using it are more hedonistic than ideological. I always get useful results, but more importantly, there is the pure pleasure of being able to crystal-ball down any spammy results that come up 👎 🔮 💃
@liztai waait are you talking about the show? Only realised after seeing your post that there's a #CDrama out that's different from the English one, as well as the fact that the English one is beings done by Netflix 😅
I've read the books, which were awesome (+ the translation to English was well done, with footnotes pointing out some nuances that couldn't be directly translated). I'm guessing from your posts that the (c-drama) show is worth it too?
