What I love about #ThreeBody is that it shows countries around the world working together with China to defeat this threat. They are all equals in this conflict. There was a conversation between our main lead with one of the leaders of a European nation which I found moving. It showed that they were both humans with loved ones to protect.
I have real worries that Netflix adaptation would forgo this cooperative element and paint some countries as baddies.

To imagine that a Chinese author imagined a world where every country worked together to save the world ... and to see the opposite from Netflix would be quite insulting tbh.

There's still hope, anyway. "The Wandering Earth" is on Netflix (at least for us in the EU) in the original version. So, maybe, we'll be able to watch Three Bodies in the new and in the original releases.
One can always hope. 😀

Anita Lewis (ajlewis2@social.vivaldi.net)'s status on Friday, 05-Jan-2024 20:04:14 JST Anita Lewis I can only read through translation and am encouraged to make a second attempt at reading Three Body. Your discussion on the movie is helpful to me.
I remember a time when I decided to read books at the library alphabetically by author. One of the first was a translation of a Japanese SF and I remember the feel of such a different way of seeing. It let me know the world is much bigger than I how I see. I can at least reach out and touch even without total understanding. There is much that crosses back and forth over barriers, things that matter.

Also, I wonder how much the Netflix audience know about Liu Cixin. And Chinese SF style in general, when not "mediated" by well known sino-american writer and translators like Ken Liu or Ted Chiang. -

After watching the teaser, my heart dropped. It lacked the subtlety, pathos and intricacies of the Cdrama adaptation and will prob never get there. It's hard to translate the cultural touches to a western adaptation and would most likely be watered down or bulldozed over.

Badri (badri@snipetteville.in)'s status on Friday, 05-Jan-2024 20:06:27 JST Badri @liztai waait are you talking about the show? Only realised after seeing your post that there's a #CDrama out that's different from the English one, as well as the fact that the English one is beings done by Netflix 😅
I've read the books, which were awesome (+ the translation to English was well done, with footnotes pointing out some nuances that couldn't be directly translated). I'm guessing from your posts that the (c-drama) show is worth it too? -
