   Per peeve about the #RedNote thing (besides the fact it's not really it's name)

   For goodness sakes 小红书’s name is not in reference to Mao's little red book. Just because Westerners call that "little red book", doesnt mean the Chinese called it that. It's not a direct translation la. (For one, calling anything 小 “small small” diminishes it's importance. In Chinese Mao's book is called 红宝书 (Hong Bao Shu) "The Red Treasure Book" or formally, 《毛主席语录》 (Mao Zhuxi Yulu) Quotations from Chairman Mao.

   Chinese people just like to label everything red, ok? It's our most auspicious colour. It's lucky. Our hong paos are red. Our wedding dresses are red. Red is everywhere during Chinese New Year. This had been like this for thousands of years before the CCP. Alrighty?

     @monsoonrains yes, ngl I did think this at first, but immediately realised, wait, doesn't make sense lol. I did more research and found out lol. The company denied it themselves. I mean why would any company want to name themselves after an old political book their grandparents read when they're trying to look cool?

     @miket330 me too! Tho ah, I get the impression you think I am from China. I am Chinese Malaysian. 😆 Since we live very close to China, and have retained our language and culture, we understand them better than the West, for eg.

     @liztai It's driving me nuts that the name "RedNote" has proliferated so much of late that RedNotebook journaling app is lost in the clutter. Need a digital flamethrower to break through the glut of chatter about the social media app to find any discussion about the journaling app.

     @craigburdett @liztai Even worse, the "Chinese" app they banned is segregated from China proper, while the one that people migrated to involves even closer contact with Chinese people (and undermines the HELL out of the anti-China narrative the PsTB have so carefully crafted over the years).

     @liztai @craigburdett I think it will contribute to an increasing cynicism about the PsTB and their motivations, not necessarily a more favourable view of China.

     And personally I don't give a shit if a bunch of ignoramuses wish to wallow in ignorance. That will hurt them more than anyone else in the long term. I have no sympathy for self-inflicted injury.

     @liztai According to the wikipedia, the founders even addressed that it was just a coincidence; it's because co-founder Mao Wenchao worked at Bain & Company and went to Stanford, both of which are primarily red.
