Just wondering if it's safe to click on the "unsubscribe" link or whether that will simply confirm that my email address is active.

It troubles me that the API data for the UK Covid dashboard haven't been updated this week.

I do hope that's a temporary glitch and not that it's been quietly discontinued. As far as I know, the API data are the only way to tell what the #covid19 situation is in my local area, given that the new dashboard doesn't allow you to zoom in to specific areas any more.

I have just discovered that it's now possible to pay for a private #Covid19 booster jab in the UK, so I guess I could have a spring booster if I want one.

This paper suggests a second annual booster is beneficial at a population level for the 50-64 age group (which includes me), but what I'd really like to know is the benefit at the individual level.

Anyone got any links to research that might help quantify that?

I came across another example of the #DigitalDivide the other day.

I parked in a car park where the only way to pay was with an app.

What a massive faff! It took me about 15 minutes to figure out which app I needed (with the help of a friendly local who explained the system to me), download the app, register my details, and finally make the payment.

It would have taken about 15 seconds just to stick a couple of coins in a machine.

And what are people without smartphones supposed to do?

OK, I've been travelling most of this week and only keeping half an eye on UK news, so can someone explain to me what's going on with this nonsense with Lindsay Hoyle?

I understand that he changed the order of voting on an SNP motion and a Labour amendment in an unconventional way, and that was controversial.

And I understand he's been criticised for "giving in to threats of violence".

I don't understand how those things are connected.

What am I missing?

And indeed even if the verdict goes against Israel, it's hard to see what it would change on the ground. Surely Israel will just ignore the ruling, and without the US on board, I can't see how the ICJ could possibly enforce it.

Re that last retoot: it's written from an entirely US perspective, but I think the issues it describes are mirrored closely here in the UK.

Well of course Hong Kong should release Jimmy Lai, but I can't help thinking that the UK doesn't have the same moral authority when it comes to calling for the release of political prisoners as it would have if we hadn't jailed someone for 6 months just last week for an entirely peaceful protest.

$400 million might be a lot of money to you or me, but in the context of a global fund to mitigate the effects of climate change, it's vanishingly small.

For context, we spent £20 billion a few years ago on hosting the Olympics: a party for a couple of weeks.

Bloody Hell, the Dutch have voted for the Nazis. I'd always thought of the Dutch as a sensible lot. Guess I was wrong.

Let's hope the non-Nazi politicians are sensible enough not to go into coalition with the Nazis so the Nazis don't actually get to govern the country.

@botvolution Maybe they're playing the long game and figure they'll be able to inflict a lot more cruelty in the long run if they can neuter the judiciary

Maybe the government never had any intention of sending anyone to Rwanda.

Maybe they just want to try to do something that's obviously unlawful so that they can pick a fight with the courts, and then use it as an excuse for limiting the powers of the judiciary to keep the government honest.
