In case anyone is wondering which direction UK interest rates are moving in, I got 2 letters from my bank today that shed some light on the issue.

The first one said that they're reducing the interest rate on my savings account.

The second one said that they're increasing the interest rate on my credit card account.

So I think the clear conclusion is that interest rates are going in whichever direction makes more money for the bank.

Ah, looks like we now have details about the autumn #covid19 booster campaign in the UK.

Available on the NHS only for those 65 and over, care home residents, those with specific health conditions, and front line health and social care staff.

Everyone else will have to pay. Looks like it costs about £100.

Which sucks.

It beggars belief that some amazing science gave us the tools to mitigate the threat of covid, and we choose not to use them.

OK, help me out here folks. Reeves has studied economics. She must know that there is a difference between current spending and capital spending.

She must also know about the Keynesian multiplier effects of capital spending.

Cutting infrastructure projects is surely not simply a matter of not understanding the economics of it. There is presumably some other reason.

What is she playing at?

I think I'm probably vastly over-paying for my mobile phone contract at the moment: about £80/month for 2 phones, SIM only, with Vodafone.

But happily my contract expires next week.

What's the going rate these days for a SIM-only contract if you don't need to have huge amounts of mobile data (which I don't)?

And which is a good company to switch to if Vodafone won't give me a good price?

@green_bens Not much. My current plan includes 150 GB/month, but I don't use anything like that amount. Often it's less than 1 GB. Even in a busy month it's rarely more than 2 or 3.

Nice try Wiley, but no, I'm not going to fill in that form with oodles of personal data that you seem to need (why?) before I can download my certificate.

I'm just going to have to try to manage without a certificate to celebrate my achievement of publishing one of the top 10% of papers in a single medium-tier journal in a 2 year period (if that's even true).

It'll be tough, for sure, but I'll do my best to get by.

I've noticed that several websites where I've been happily using 2FA with them sending me an SMS message for years seem to want me to switch to using an authenticator app instead.

Is that really more secure? How? And if so, is that level of security realistically needed for anything a normal person might do except banking?
