    @aral the Wikipedia article on democracy is clear that elections constitute a "minimalist definition of democracy": https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Democracy

    A democracy without protection against fascism is an unstable equilibrium: it only works as far as nobody pulls it away from equilibrium.

    @aral plus there's an obvious and simpler design pattern using one check box for each of "this campaign" and "Uplift". This amazing design pattern even scales to more than 2 entities, it's as if it had been designed for their use case!

    @mekkaokereke @jshirley
    I have an additional question from the perspective of a non American: why would the police show up as a result of an emergency call for a traffic accident? Shouldn't it be an ambulance that shows up rather than a police car? Or am I misunderstanding how emergency services work in the US?

    @melissawm @aral @opensourcedesign @simulo @fosdem as this is a generic FOSS problem, would it make sense for FOSDEM to have a panel on the subject, say in the community devroom?

    You highlight the key problem: "in the absence of any other source of funding". It looks like we need to find other sources of funding and grow them enough that they can provide an alternative. Neither is easy, it will take time and the earlier we start talking about it, the earlier we can get there.

    @paul_ipv6 @mekkaokereke exactly. Within a 10 minute walk of my home I can choose to eat Spanish, Nepali, Sri Lankan, Indian, Persian, Italian, Chinese, Turkish, or fish & chips. And that's only the restaurants, I can also go to the pub and have Thai food or pie & mash.

    I'm hungry after posting this 😄

    @unicorndeburgh @heathborders @LauraLangdon @acdha @mekkaokereke @bluejekyll yep, that's how it was explained to me by someone who lived in those suburbs, voted against the MARTA extension for exactly that reason and was apologising for their mistake after having visited our London office and seen first hand how good public transport works.

    @doot @lanodan indeed. Realising what is not obvious, remembering I had to learn it once too and digging out explanations for basic concepts is one of the best things that coaching at codebar taught me. (https://codebar.io/ if anyone is interested)

    @neil I think it was Red Hat, around 2000 ish. First one that ran well out of the box was Ubuntu 7.04 or 7.10, not sure which (on a ThinkPad T42 which as you know is awesome).
