Trump at his "Press Conference" today yammering about how Biden & Harris are going to crash the stock market. The FOX News screen displays that the Dow Jones has reached a record 40,563 — the highest it has ever been.*

*Yes, I know that the Stock Market doesn’t tell the full story of an economy — but it’s the part Trump & his investors** care about.

    **I said what I said.

    Happy May Day!

The USA has "Labor Day" in September instead of May because of fear of Socialism. It's not coincidence that we also have the weakest social safety net and weakest worker protections in similar economies.

    Terrible Drive UX:

    1. Assign rights to a folder to several people.
    2. Create subfolders, and everyone inherits rights to them.
    3. Decide to remove all but one or two people from one of the subfolders. The Google UI DEFAULTS to removing them from the entire tree!

And that's how most of an event planning committee lost access to all shared files, until I found the person who had accidentally not noticed the little checkbox, and they re-shared things.

    This is just so delicious!

DeSantis lied to migrants to get them on a plane to Massachusetts as a political stunt. Because they were victims of that crime, they were eligible to apply for legal status as the victim of trafficking. They can now live and work legally in the US!

"Although hospitalizations and deaths involving COVID-19 have declined substantially since 2022, rates of infections with the virus have not".

Chart shows COVID deaths high in 2020 through 2022, then dropping below 5,000 people dying per week -- while the rate of COVID infections stays pretty much at the same level from 2020 to today.

I’d like to see this chart going back to 2015 or so. Would it tell the story “COVID isn’t causing more hospitalizations than the flu, but we’re now getting sick a whole hell of a lot often in general”? That's certainly the way it seems to me. :-(

And get the latest COVID shot!

"COVID-19 vaccination reduces the risk of symptomatic disease and hospitalization by about 50% compared to people not up to date on vaccination. Over 95% of adults hospitalized in 2023-2024 due to COVID-19 had no record of receiving the latest vaccine. Treatment with nirmatrelvir-ritonavir (Paxlovid) in persons at high risk of severe disease has been shown to decrease risk of hospitalization by 75% and death by 60%"

I think the CDC — and governments in general — should be pushing *hard* for cleaner air, more paid sick leave, and masking whenever rates increase.

Oddly, while I disagree with the CDC’s recent recommendation, this CDC article seems very solid.

On a regular basis, someone (usually a straight, cis, white man) says that we can solve the problem of people being nasty online by using real names. It doesn't work, and it hurts people who can't risk using their real name.

"Results show that in the context of online firestorms, non-anonymous individuals are more aggressive compared to anonymous individuals. This effect is reinforced if selective incentives are present and if aggressors are intrinsically motivated."

Digital Social Norm Enforcement: Online Firestorms in Social Media
Actors of public interest today have to fear the adverse impact that stems from social media platforms. Any controversial behavior may promptly trigger temporal, but potentially devastating storms of emotional and aggressive outrage, so called online firestorms. Popular targets of online firestorms are companies, politicians, celebrities, media, academics and many more. This article introduces social norm theory to understand online aggression in a social-political online setting, challenging the popular assumption that online anonymity is one of the principle factors that promotes aggression. We underpin this social norm view by analyzing a major social media platform concerned with public affairs over a period of three years entailing 532,197 comments on 1,612 online petitions. Results show that in the context of online firestorms, non-anonymous individuals are more aggressive compared to anonymous individuals. This effect is reinforced if selective incentives are present and if aggressors are intrinsically motivated.

    Bless Ed Yong:

"Covering long Covid solidified my view that science is not the objective, neutral force it is often misconstrued as. It is instead a human endeavor, relentlessly buffeted by our culture, values and politics. As energy-depleting illnesses that disproportionately affect women, long Covid and M.E./C.F.S. are easily belittled by a sexist society that trivializes women’s pain, and a capitalist one that values people according to their productivity."

We all knew this, but they've scienced it up.

"Calculations with an indoor air transmission model showed that if an infected individual with this emission rate entered a room, a susceptible person would inhale an infectious dose within 6 to 37 min in a room with normal ventilation. Thus, our data show that exhaled aerosols from a single person can transmit covid-19 to others within minutes at normal indoor conditions."

Jenn Wenner of Rolling Stone wrote a book, profiling 7 musicians -- all white men. In an interview by David Marchese about the book, Wenner defends this saying that there weren't any women or Black men who were "articulate enough on this intellectual level."

Did you know that you can put a Freeze on credit checks with the 3 big credit bureaus, for free? If someone tries to apply for a loan or credit card using your identity, the application will be refused because they can't run a credit check.

You can create a login with each of them on their respective websites, and put on a freeze.

No matter how careful you are with your data, scammers can get it all.
