That large round structure is a room-sized boiling pot in which they boiled sugarcane juice to make molasses before they were dried and shipped off to the Danish colonizers’ home country.
“They attack the free press. They call them the enemy of the people… They put their unqualified relatives in cushy government jobs… And they refuse to accept legitimate election results when they lose and they use violence to stay in power…”
You are thinking too logically, but in the irrational #Trump world, it Trump Accountability Office #TAO will mean accountability to Trump, and ONLY to Trump 😀
>> And people have been providing services on the internet as a hobby essentially since the beginning of it. And interconnections on the internet effectively works as a massive zero-sum game
You sound like a child. How long have you been on the #Internet and how much of its history are you aware of?
>>>> The massive point you're missing is that most of the Fediverse is ran like a charity
I'm not missing anything. You just missed what I already said in response to your earlier post:
>> Services don't NEED to work in market economies. They can be sponsored by donations from patrons & benefactors. But SOMEBODY has to pay. Freeloaders had no right to whine
The world does not run on charity alone. Charity is needed and is very helpful. Otherwise users, patrons, customers must pay
>> Yeah sure I'll inject ads on my own #Fediverse software…and sure people won't then flock en masse to other servers that they can run on a shoebox
Snark, and still miss the point 🙄
#Fediverse is massive infrastructure, not just your little shoebox. How many users do you host? How do YOU make a living? How do OTHERS on the back of whose work you run your shoebox make a living?
EVERYTHING needs external nourishment, from a simple biological cell to complex computing infrastructure
>>>> Advertisers aren't needed, they just are manipulators
>> Who pays for #Fediverse? #Mastodon costs money to run. If we don't pay, they WILL have to fall back on ads
>> Freeloaders spoil it for everyone
ONLY by paying you earn right to complain.
In a #MarketEconomy, paying for services also incentivizes development of alternatives to which you can switch to if/when a provider becomes abusive or manipulative.
>> are they paying me for the use of my computer to run their adshit? no? then it doesn’t need to run on my computer.
They are paying you in kind.
By running search engines, by running your email services, by providing storage for your documents and photos, by powering your blogs and social media, by giving you maps and directions, by translating ideas between languages, and in so many other ways — ALL of which cost money — that you DON’T PAY for.
>> Our new office is one mile closer to my house along the same bus line. Thanks to #Chicago traffic it will cut my commute from 60-70 minutes to about 30-40
If it is taking you 30 minutes to travel that marginal last mile, you might consider walking 🙂
I usually walk at 3 miles/hour, but YMMV.
For longer distances, I prefer #CTA trains over buses whenever possible because they don't get stuck in traffic.
I ditched my car completely many years back. Now I'm both carFree and careFree
I once took a challenge from my daughter, who boarded a #CTA bus to school. I decided to walk instead. I reached there before the bus did
I had a similar challenge with some guests visiting us. They were used to car comfort and could not walk even if they wanted to. So I put them in an Uber ride, while I walked (There was no room left for me in the car anyway.) Imagine their shock when I was waiting for them when their ride arrived
