    >> are they paying me for the use of my computer to run their adshit? no? then it doesn’t need to run on my computer.

They are paying you in kind.

By running search engines, by running your email services, by providing storage for your documents and photos, by powering your blogs and social media, by giving you maps and directions, by translating ideas between languages, and in so many other ways — ALL of which cost money — that you DON’T PAY for.

Privacy is not FREE. Pay for it

@rameshgupta Search engines somewhat given the lack of alternatives, although there is some without any ads.
Email services there's a ton of alternatives, typically including the ISP you're already paying for, same shit for blogs.
Social media? Not really applicable for the Fediverse, although it's more a mere network than media.
Maps? OpenStreetMap doesn't runs on ads.

And this can go on and on. Advertisers aren't needed, they just are manipulators as a business.

@rameshgupta Yeah sure I'll inject ads on my own Fediverse software (I'm a Pleroma dev) and sure people won't then flock en masse to other servers that they can run on a shoebox (Pleroma, honk, GoToSocial, snac, … can).

YES! Use them to avoid ads. Simple. Use #Linux instead of #Windows, or pay up for #MacOS to avoid ads.

      >> Social media? Not really applicable for the Fediverse. Advertisers aren't needed, they just are manipulators

Who pays for #Fediverse? #Mastodon costs money to run. If we don't pay, they WILL have to fall back on ads. Freeloaders spoil it for everyone

ONLY by paying you earn right to complain.

In a #MarketEconomy, paying for services also incentivizes development of alternatives to which you can switch to if/when a provider becomes abusive or manipulative.

For true manipulators, we need #AntiTrust. #LaissezFaire is #utopia

@rameshgupta And specially, if your conception is that services must work within market economics, then everything needs a business model, even charities and public goods.
Which then means no caring about people, which is exactly what you're saying with "only by paying you earn right to complain".

@rameshgupta The massive point you're missing is that most of the Fediverse is ran like a charity, Mastodon and it's flagship instance mastodon.social is the exception against pretty much all the others.

Snark, and still miss the point 🙄

#Fediverse is massive infrastructure, not just your little shoebox. How many users do you host? How do YOU make a living? How do OTHERS on the back of whose work you run your shoebox make a living?

EVERYTHING needs external nourishment, from a simple biological cell to complex computing infrastructure

Your point is that ads are required: They're not.
Then you tried to say that market economics are required for services: They're not.

I'm not missing anything. You just missed what I already said in response to your earlier post:

      >> Services don't NEED to work in market economies. They can be sponsored by donations from patrons & benefactors. But SOMEBODY has to pay. Freeloaders had no right to whine

The world does not run on charity alone. Charity is needed and is very helpful. Otherwise users, patrons, customers must pay

#ARPANET was created by the #UnitedStates Department of Defense.

@rameshgupta @lanodan You know that last line is funny, Pleroma is ran on thousands of servers. and lanodan is a developer for it, things have happened sure, but I'm sure he would still be missed by some if he leaves (thanks lanodan for helping out with pleroma btw)

Also some instances are reaching 10 years old and they've been run entirely for free, paid out of pocket by the admins. No ads. Maybe I'm missing the point or something, I don't know. Mastodon social blocks me anyway. But you seem like an asshole
