@gwynnion The Democrats have a playbook of some kind, in the event of X do Y. This must be drilled into freshmen congresspeople so hard that they start believing that everyone follows the same playbook and become confused when they don't. This playbook hasn't been updated since sometime around 1960, and then probably just to remove the part about Black people not being allowed to be Democrats.

@fkamiah17 @dgar Season finale? Series finale, more like. Actually, at this point it's more like a season finale of your favourite show that you're almost hoping might be the series finale because it feels like it probably should have been cancelled a couple seasons ago and now they're starting some ill-conceived time travel plot pushing the setting back 70 years.

@ubiquiti_fanatic @rebeccawatson It has been firmly demonstrated over the last ten or twelve years that it's absolute folly to assume anything is too ridiculous for someone to believe.

@Wolven I really want AI to be awesome and useful, but everything being marketed right now is just absolute garbage. I think it's probably already ruined the term "AI" for any serious work.
Even if we ignore the environmental and ethical concerns (which we shouldn't), AI isn't even good at most of the the purposes they're pushing for it to be used. AI seems best at providing fuzzy answers to vague questions, not truthful answers to specific questions.

@gidi I don't think so, no. I used to have that problem a lot but not since switching to firefox so it might just specifically be that particular browser, maybe try others?

@inthehands 2 and 2a are a main reason autistic people don't get hired often (that and allistics tend to interrupt distrust us for some reason). I've tried ignoring job requirements and never got any responses, so I'm clearly doing something else wrong.

@jeffjarvis English doesn't have grammar rules, it has sets of common grammar conventions. Not everyone follows the same set of conventions, but it's still English. Example, the split infinitive "rule" was introduced by someone with a hard-on for Latin, but split infinitives have been part of English for longer than it's been Modern English. Same with ending sentences with prepositions.
Judging people based on their use of English is no less bigoted than judging them based on skin color.

Any company that is so important that its collapse would cause extreme harm to society, it shouldn't be privately operated. It also shouldn't be a for-profit organization since other things obviously must take priority over profit.

@gidi MGM got bought by Amazon (killing the new Stargate series in the process), so maybe it's just a section of Prime video that you pay extra for?

@jake4480 If an AI gobbles up something with a share-alike license (or other "viral" licenses like the GPL), shouldn't that mean anything the AI produces is also covered by that license?

@thomasfuchs Because Apple (and Google) only care about user safety and privacy as far as they're required to. Occasionally they'll make a big announcement of some safety/privacy/security features, but that's just for PR. If they can get away with making a token effort (and they definitely can), that's as much as they'll do. *Maybe* if enough people make a fuss over things like this, they'll make a token effort to stop it, but they'll only go as far as they have to to quell the discontent.

@thomasfuchs Sorry, didn't mean to imply you didn't. I was curious about the actual release date and found that bit amusing.

@thomasfuchs from everymac: "The Macintosh (128k) was the first relatively inexpensive computer to use a graphical user interface, 3.5" disks, a consistent look-and-feel among applications, and true WYSIWYG printing, all of which are taken for granted today."
That "relatively" is doing a lot of heavy lifting. The original $2,495 retail price is worth about $7,518 today.

@dpnash @NamelessCynic @aprilfollies "Washing up liquid" sounds like something you could use when washing anything: you, your dog, your carpet, clothes, etc. You're probably ok washing your car with it.

@thomasfuchs I think it could be argued that generative AI has made lists of fictional magic potions for TTRPGs better. Maybe lists of fictional places as well? That's probably about it, though, and it's still kinda ripping off authors.
