    @thomasfuchs I think it could be argued that generative AI has made lists of fictional magic potions for TTRPGs better. Maybe lists of fictional places as well? That's probably about it, though, and it's still kinda ripping off authors.

      @thomasfuchs @lisamelton Agree with the rest of the list, and I’m very very very much an AI pessimist, but I’m going to quibble a bit with Customer Support replies. What is being used currently is a dressed up form of “if -> then” statements practically hard coded into the support flows. I’m not really kidding. I’ve set up several of these systems from different companies.

      Context recognition and understanding is going to be *massive* when it’s properly applied to customer support. BUT you can’t just replace humans; the best approach is to use AI to collect context and provide information to the person on the other end fixing the problem, suggest documented solutions/FAQs, etc.

      That being said, having worked in support for so long, the vast majority of support inquiries could have been google searches.

      Never was a technology so misnamed as "AI." It is a giant, somewhat more sophisticated autocorrect, guessing the next word to be used.

      If you want to know the current state of "AI," totally trust your autocorrect to text your significant other and/or your boss. Or maybe your mom.

      @thomasfuchs

      Agreed.

      But to be somewhat fair (which not all techbros deserve) I do think that the original impulse is not all bad. For example, much of this research started out to see if human thought could actually be modeled because such a model would be useful for brain science.

      Of course, we are nowhere near modelling human thought processes -- and low and behold this thing we have instead can be used to make money! And the whole project goes off the rails.

      @thomasfuchs you can add "generating bedtime stories for me to read to my daughter" too the list of positives... Definitely better than what I was coming up with on my own.

      "AI made search results bad" is Wikipedia-Editor tier pointing fingers. "It's not that we've weaponized information search for a color revolution, the bogeyman did it."

      @cvnt @thomasfuchs Search results for 90% of non-niche topics were shit long before GPT came out. Blame pajeets aching for quick buck and search engines themselves by not making better algorithms despite having trillions in revenue.

      @cvnt @thomasfuchs Now the most performant models being SaaSS under lock and key, and lobotomized to prevent wrongthink on top of that, is a much larger issue than wordcels seething over being replaced with an Nvidia card.

      Positives:

      - teaching junior devs to read the documentation after shooting themselves on the foot
      - have it write nonsense to troll trust fund bros
      - making people stop using google since their ranking is so shitty it's putting bad generated results above everything else
      - getting copywriting with the exact quality and coherence that greedy corps want to pay for

      @thomasfuchs Just yesterday I ran across a new addition to the By my Eyes app, which provides users a choice of asking a real person or an AI for assistance in describing what’s in front of the visually impaired person. Pretty cool!
