@thomasfuchs I think it could be argued that generative AI has made lists of fictional magic potions for TTRPGs better. Maybe lists of fictional places as well? That's probably about it, though, and it's still kinda ripping off authors.

Make Nazis Dead Again (stg@c.im)'s status on Tuesday, 28-Nov-2023 01:18:28 JST Make Nazis Dead Again @thomasfuchs @lisamelton Agree with the rest of the list, and I’m very very very much an AI pessimist, but I’m going to quibble a bit with Customer Support replies. What is being used currently is a dressed up form of “if -> then” statements practically hard coded into the support flows. I’m not really kidding. I’ve set up several of these systems from different companies.
Context recognition and understanding is going to be *massive* when it’s properly applied to customer support. BUT you can’t just replace humans; the best approach is to use AI to collect context and provide information to the person on the other end fixing the problem, suggest documented solutions/FAQs, etc.
That being said, having worked in support for so long, the vast majority of support inquiries could have been google searches.

If you want to know the current state of "AI," totally trust your autocorrect to text your significant other and/or your boss. Or maybe your mom.

But to be somewhat fair (which not all techbros deserve) I do think that the original impulse is not all bad. For example, much of this research started out to see if human thought could actually be modeled because such a model would be useful for brain science.
Of course, we are nowhere near modelling human thought processes -- and low and behold this thing we have instead can be used to make money! And the whole project goes off the rails.

Positives:- teaching junior devs to read the documentation after shooting themselves on the foot
- have it write nonsense to troll trust fund bros
- making people stop using google since their ranking is so shitty it's putting bad generated results above everything else
- getting copywriting with the exact quality and coherence that greedy corps want to pay for -

Exam questions! ‘Cos after about a year of seeing students asking ChatGPT instead of going to the library I’m sick of it and they can correct its mistakes for a test instead. AI is great for revenge!

Pretty cool!
