A lack of standards in social media is typified right here. It’s only sensible to write to the largest of the posting sizes out there, but the larger must be butchered (once, sometimes twice) to fit the format. It’s a ridiculous waste of resources and completely preventable with a 500 char (minimum) standard. (These are the things some of us worry about so you don’t have to.)

It’s absolutely their right and choice, but this is very commercial pricing. I wonder how it will hold up after federation and more implementations. I want to see entry level community pricing for these kinds of products. cc @atomicpoet.

@dansup @pixelfed Are you addressing the notorious false positive problem that made block lists hated in many circles on Twitter? The case where anyone can slip any personal enemy into the list for random reasons, and end up cutting them off from thousands of their mutuals and never even alerting the victim to it? They just disappeared from their friends and associates with no awareness or recourse. It was very toxic.

There is no question kbin is the stronger product right now. It feels more mature than Lemmy , even where it isn't. What we're discussing right now is #Calckey implementing the group actor ahead of schedule, at which point, it will basically have precisely the same features as Kbin/Lemmy (it already has threading). With all the rest of the tools already in Calckey, it will a good solution for ambitious communities.

Good morning. Biden has deftly dodged another terrorist attack by the nut-right, but this is another case where we're relieved that they only shot a few hostages. We need to fix our government, and especially their vapid toxicity toward it, so they can't shoot too many more of them.

Had a great call with @kainoa and @atomicpoet yesterday. We have several projects growing that may all ripen in the next few weeks. I can't wait for the harvest!

@atomicpoet I honestly don't understand why anyone thinks there is a competition. The decentralized networking model is clearly attracting the best, brightest, and most informed segments of society who understand its promise, and the perils of continuing social media as we knew it. Anyone that doesn't get this probably won't ever want or need to. They will come around when they need to engage the world of real things. Let the mass-cultists enjoy the central silos and all the chaos they spew.

The kinds of problems I/we welcome. The Calckey monster is building up muscle mass. Once editing is released, we can start to flex some of it. :)

@atomicpoet I think the entire fediverse project needs to be reframed to get people out of this mindset that we're trying to build another Twitter. I don't much care if the masses ever care for the Fediverse. In fact, I'd be thrilled if they stayed away. I think we need social media that serves the people who care. About anything. If that sounds a bit elitist, well, perhaps it is. But so what? Is there some law that says we have to pretend everyone's voice has similar value? Spoiler. They don't.

Has anyone else noticed that, like, in the last 3 years, a google search is almost as useful as asking the same question of your cat? Talk about enshittification, sheesh.

@jimcarroll @atomicpoet I am sure all of that is true, but global media is still sitting out there waiting for a venue, and whoever delivers it to them first is likely to win. Twitter wasn't elegant on any level. It was just there at exactly the right time.

@atomicpoet They seem so convinced this is something we all want to do. It's this grand delusion that so many overrated valley punks and their VCs seem to have. It has no basis in the real world.

I'm a bit embarrassed to say that It's been a long time since I caught up with how the @Flipboard is evolving. It's just so well done, and chock full of features and ideas I once criticized it for not having. And now that it's partly integrated with Fediverse, I am seeing all kinds of new possibilities for it. I'm allocating a lot of time next week to studying it more closely, and seeing if it can become the foundation of a really cool curation idea I've been noodling for years.
