Older generations gaslit themselves into thinking that they worked so hard to provide well for their children. Nah fam, you did it for *your* social standing. The instant a young person rejects what you thought as essential for the "good" life (buying a house, having children, getting married etc.) , you have a melt and start guilt tripping immediately. You can't fathom someone having an enjoyable life without paying in misery coins to conform first.
@samebchase there is this weird glorification of denying yourself joy. Someone has to tell them that it hasn't made them a better person, it has made them resentful towards young people. And that they frankly bought too many children into the world just to fit into societal norms. They're not ready to confront the truth that they would be exponentially better off with one or zero children.
Children who behave like children are the ones that are doing okay. The easy-to-handle ones, the "old souls", the "wise-beyond-their-years" have had adult roles shoved on to them and don't feel safe showing their childlike side.
Sincerely, the teacher who your "surprisingly mature" children break down in front of.
Mirza Ghalib's work is proof that an Indian person can be poignant and sorrowful, or even sarcastic and jaded.... Until you give them mangoes. Then they're happy, the cruel world can do its damndest.
Good folks of Mastodon, I've written a little book - about learning random stuff from the internet and talking to my friends about it. Please have a look if you have some time to spare!
The world looked at us girls and silently asked us "why were you allowed to be born? Your parents would be so much better off with a boy. " So we bent over backwards to prove that we were of use, that we were smart and beautiful. We had to justify being worth the effort of raising. We accommodated as we were stuffed into boxes. I for one, had no real personality till my mid-20s. I was just performing being a useful girl so that I was allowed to live. 2/2
The adult gender ratio in Haryana ( the state where I was born) is 879:1000 right now. Female feticide was (and is) common and normalized in the society. I hope that someday there's a wide-base research of women who were born into such places and how it utterly annihilated our childhoods. Where the boys our age were allowed to children (some of them are allowed to be children well into their 40s, actually) 1/2
@_thegeoff oh, I love all kebabs and I fully acknowledge that they aren't an Indian (whatever was ancient India in our imagination) invention. We got 'em because of Mughal dynasties and trade routes and all of that. So yeah, kebab is mince held together. And bits of protein cooked on spit or tandoor or whatever outdoor fire source. 😅
I don't care if BlueSky gains popularity over Mastodon. At this point, I don't wanna be on the dance floor with the cool kids, imma be in the side room with the five weirdos I like.
