Values are, ultimately, subjective I suppose. But I also think that the perceived societal value of professions follows cycles like fads.
To me, it doesn’t really matter because it takes all types to make a system. In order for the farmer to keep the farm running he needs someone to perform magic with financial instruments. The cop, fireman, teacher, nurse, etc all benefit from mortgages, car loans, and financial instruments that allow them to retire. So I tend to avoid assigning values as long as they are serving someone else. -

Retirement has much to do with what one does now. People are living longer and chose to not have kids. That killed the traditional pension and made them unviable. So now it is more up to the individual to properly save. For many that will require financial services whether that be advisors or the folks who create vehicles for long term savings and payments. That requires people to move money around. An annuity, for example, is a pure financial instrument. And that needs someone to create it and manage it.
I think the biggest difference today is that more responsibility is on the individual to make good decisions, at least enough good decisions. That wasn’t always the case. But even on the days of pensions you still needed people to manage them. It’s just that people are more exposed to it. -

@cjd @sj_zero
Post scarcity is a fable because human desires are the infinite and people will just increase what they demand to meet the supply. -

I sometimes forget that the really long fixed rate mortgages is a US thing. I got mine in 2012 while the market here was still recovering from 2008 and locked in very low…a simple savings account has a higher rate now. It’s surreal. -

Right, in the US 30 and even 40 years is common. -

Right, Freddie and Fannie. Ugly solution, to be honest. 2008 showed that. -

For most mortgages, Feddie Mac and Fannie Mae can buy the loans as needed. Then there’s other programs like FHA and VA (for military).
The government basically backs most mortgages here so the banks aren’t fully dependent exposed to the risks. -

Yeah Trillian was great. So great it was worth paying for when IM apps were free. -

“Gun laws” is a broad category. Some most likely pass constitutional muster while some do not.
The difference? Well, in reality, it’s up to interpretation. But even if you take the 2A very literally there are cases where people can lose rights (e.g, felons, insane, children). And there are times when rights collide (e.g. property rights). Then there’s regulation: at what point does regulation become infringement? That an open question.
I say this as a very strong 2A supporter. -

Hey @alex
Quick dumb question. So I did an upgrade over the weekend it's pretty clear that the fe upgraded, but I'm uncertain of the be. Here's what the dashboard shows. What is a reasonable be release to be paired with fe-3.1?
Thanks -

You can see a protocol finally get hot (even if the outside world still thinks it’s all Mastodon, who cares, most users don’t know how tech actually works), and you pick another one that isn’t hot?
Life tough. It’s even tougher when you’re stupid. -

Chris isn’t clueless. A standard could be made for a no comment post. It would just require an agreed to standard to mark a post to not take comments. If Mastodon implemented it, a giant piece of the Fediverse would do it. The trick is software that ignores it. It would be an effective block to any instance that respected the flag on the post.
Not perfect, but probably effective enough that any comments would only be propagated to instances that did not implement the standard. Then the advocates of that would start blocking domains that don’t respect it. -

@sj_zero @newt May only issue with the soapbox web interface is that when I return from a thread it returns me to the top of my feed. Anyone know if that’s been fixed? I’m ok to update my front end. But I love the idea of abandoning the apps and just using a mobile browser. -

Usually, unless you are MicroSoft. :)
Not sure what the differences are as this is my first soapbox instance. Overall I really like it and the install was much easier than Mastodon which I tried first and eventually gave up and just used Cloudron. But I've followed Alex for a while and decided to try and install Soapbox on a box in my office and it ... just worked and I've been hooked ever since. I was impressed on how easily it just installed and it just works. The interface is nice and clean and it defaults to 5000 characters. -

Right. Huge props to @alex on this. Not having to pay for an instance (literally running at my house) is fantastic. -

It’s not a matter of technology level. It’s all tied up in local politics. Enough local politicians haven’t been paid off … I mean convinced… to grant a monopoly to a company to get it done.
That being said, once that happens, it’s quite sweet…and nowhere near $320/month. I’m paying $70 for 1 Gb up/down. I could pay up for 2Gb but I don’t need it at all.
