@Gotterdammerung@mekkaokereke reminds me how MLK jr and Einstein have been flattened in our history books and only small snippets of their large body of written work is taught. These guys were radicals. They were fantastic writers….and they called out wars of empire and systems of economic oppression
@mekkaokereke has been very hard for Harris to say “okay this time if you turn out to vote i absolutely will figure out making sure voting is treated as a right across all the states and we’ll get $15 minimum wage” when four years ago Dems ran on that same message, got exec + both legislative branches…and didn’t deliver. 2028 Ron desantis will be back promising trumpism. Can Dems be popular enough to not make it a close contest?
@inthehands we only care about humane immigration policies when republicans share their plans or are in power but then forget about it during dem administrations. We then end up in a situation where people are aghast when photos come out of kids in cages during Trump era only to say nothing when it turns out those pics were from Obama’s time
@thomasfuchs don’t frame balking at genocide as ideological purity. This sort of scolding at Muslims, Arabs and the young reinforces rather than convinces, imo
@thomasfuchs because dems depend on turnout from minority groups that they spend ignoring at best (voting rights) or at worst using as negotiation pieces (immigration) while they’re in office so every four years when they need the votes, they have to beg these people that this time they actually will do what they promise
@inthehands@sysadmin1138 during Obama tenure, they had both houses with more than enough dems to spare and he did nothing to advance voting rights. Then we got 2016. Base got energized and despite massive voter repression, again gained both houses and presidency in 2020. Biden then used manchin, sinema and the parliamentarian as an excuse to do nothing. And once again we find ourselves hoping that black and brown people put up with shitty laws and long waits to save us
@inthehands him as the candidate was 70% likelihood he would lose. Kamala is probably closer to 60% and some Midwest governor with no real name recognition is probably a toss up at this point. But just no path forward with him losing Michigan and Arizona because of his rightward turns on Gaza and immigration. It’s a pity because before Gaza he was most progressive president in my lifetime
@thomasfuchs the streamers have such limited options of old movies, especially from the golden era that my dad shared with me as a kid from his boyhood. Every now and then I’ll find one and watch before it goes off service but very hard to eg watch several Hitchcock movies in a row
@thomasfuchs we can’t argue with insane revenue growth that I think will be sustained for next 2-3 years as the huge tech companies have probably made guarantees to buy in future in order to get GPUs now. So nvidia will continue to make money. But it’s pretty clear AI is a money loser for everybody else
@mekkaokereke I’m an incredibly dumb person, so is it smart for Biden admin to cheer on the violent suppression and smearing of young college students as antisemites now and then expect for them to show up in November in states that he won by a few thousand votes?
@tchambers especially horrendous when you consider he lowered barriers to advertise, allowing all sorts of low quality advertisers into X that were previously banned. Tells you the exodus of quality advertisers is even worse than top line numbers suggest
@inthehands@jenniferplusplus I wish I could find the article again but someone had a great blog post about how LLMs rely on the same mechanisms as the psychic grift
@davidgerard@swearyanthony@allrite wrote this elsewhere & sharing here; “When evaluating possibilities of new tech like blockchain, AR/VR, self driving & GenAI, leftists have actually gone deep into what the tech can & can’t do whereas business media mostly accept company/VC claims at face value. Yes leftists will have typical critiques on capital accumulation but they’re also understand the tech and call out emperor for not having clothes”
@timnitGebru my LinkedIn feed has become a twitter-like cesspool of out and out call for blood, or, worse, support for one group with a loud and blaring non mention of the more helpless group. I tried to explain to a non tech friend that big tech was woke in sense of having badges to celebrate pride month, but when it came to solutions that actually tackle injustice (eg unions), big tech was the boot
@timnitGebru day one I was surprised mainstream coverage included Muslim and leftist Jewish voices. But the last day or so the business machine has really turned on to quash any voices sympathetic to Palestinian suffering.
@web3isgreat btc spiking which makes sense once you realize it’s the whales are trying to exit their fake dollars now that fiat off-ramp is getting closed
