I am watching a tech conference. I noticed how the arguments were fashion-driven. "This tech is the past!" "My tech is the future!" "My tech is inevitable!"
These are fashion arguments, something you say about clothes. "You don't want to look ridiculous, do you?" "That is so 2001!" "This is what will be hot with cool people this summer!"
No business arguments. No engineering arguments. Their main point is being cool with your peers.

Older novels have plots where people have to deal with things outside of their control. Moby Dick is a good example
