The default form method is GET, the default form action is the page you're on, and the default button type is submit. Without having to read any history, the defaults here lay out a clear picture of the conception of web forms: they're a way to construct a GUI to let a user alter the query params without url hacking. This is still something you can do and it works great

@evan My city government can't even accept online payment of the water bill so I'm having a hard time entertaining this hypothetical

We choose or are required to engage with a person, organization, business, government. They dictate what software to use for the interaction based on what is most convenient and advantageous to them.

The notion that people choose to use computer applications because they are useful at accomplishing tasks is extremely outdated. The vast majority of software use is not voluntary.

"why does software require maintenance, it's not like it wears down"
Because software is not generally useful for any inherent good; what matters is its relationship with the surrounding context, and that context is in perpetual change.

@dwineman @andreagrandi @thomasfuchs Really I suspect we're in the minority here anyway. Most of your audience will perceive the presence of any sort of graphic as a quality signal, some will perceive the opposite.

I do really enjoy an exploration of a fantasy world but I wish there were any plot device for it other than following a protagonist who suddenly receives a magical power or artifact.

Why is it not possible for an author to tell an interesting story that involves finding a novel world that doesn't involve an individual who needs to save it and/or might end up as its king?
