At this point, if you're still using the platform, that's on you. It's not going to get better.
Kudos for @arstechnica to continue bringing attention to this.

A great opinion / intro article about #federation from @eugenialoli over at #OSNews. Definitely worth a read and a share (not the least of which for the #tilvids shout-out as a @peertube instance) :mastodon: :pixelfed: :peertube: 💙

Centralized platforms grew this large because it served the capitalists behind it. The growth didn't happen because it was healthy for the communities, but healthy for billionaires' bank accounts. Smaller communities that allow individuals to connect to the people and topics that interest them are the solution. It won't lead to the next class of billionaires, but it will lead to a healthier Internet.

In order for #decentralization to work, the server install process for services is going to *HAVE* to improve. If I'm interested in running a federated instance of a service, and the first thing I see is a 35-step tutorial about how to configure nginx or arcane PHP requirements, I'm going to bail.
I think about Nextcloud, and how I installed a snap for it, and it's updated through 8 major upgrades of the service without me ever doing anything to admin it. That's where we need to get to.
@ProfessorCode @killyourfm @AdamBishop @thunderbird
Yeah, we're super happy to be able to host the Thunderbird videos on the site!
As for music content, I typically discourage it, since it falls out of scope from our edutainment mission on #tilvids Not that I have anything wrong at all with music (drummers of the world unite @killyourfm !)
I really want to start other #peertube instances up for other types of communities, but I can barely manage the one as it is. Too many hobbies...

As @LibreNyaa said, they're looking at starting their own Mastodon instance. It's always disappointing to me how these larger FOSS orgs have such delayed/low interest in decentralization. I'd love to see @mozilla start their own PeerTube and Pixelfed instances as well. I've offered to host their content on TILvids but have never heard back (love that @thunderbird chooses to call our instance home though, shout-out to @killyourfm !)
Thank you for sharing this, hopefully others find it helpful!
I can confirm, I have not added a single thing to #PeerTube outside of what comes with it. There should be (as far as I aware) zero tracking, etc. PeerTube does, however, use P2P connections to help lighten the load on servers, so that's likely what is causing those notifications.
This should be a setting you can disable if you have an account on TILvids (or any PeerTube instance) so that you don't act as a P2P node while watching videos.
Neat, some good stuff there! Thank you for sharing, I might reach out!
One thing I do on #tilvids is try to reach out to video creators that I think would be a good alignment for our mission of edutainment content, and who also are a good mix of big enough to potentially bring some audience, but also small enough that we might be able to help them grow.
Are there are edutainment video content creators out there we should reach out to? Leave some ideas in the comments, and maybe we can reach out and see if there's some interest!
What's the file size of each video? Long videos don't necessarily mean they are big, depends on the content.
Audience size is another issue. It's a chicken-and-egg problem, and at some point we creators simply need to decide if we want to force a better world or not, even if that means dealing with some short-term situations that are less than ideal.
This is why creators should just move over to @peertube instances. At this point, Google is just a middle-man. Get with a few other similar creators, set up an instance, collect donations, and make more than you likely would on YouTube anyway.

A huge #tilvids welcome to @thunderbird ! So happy to be able to support such a great project, and for them to share their content with our community!
