Heads-up for the #PeerTube community, it appears Google has been blocking many tools/IP ranges that try to synchronize with YouTube. At least for the creators on #tilvids this is a massive challenge, because they can no longer sync THEIR content on multiple platforms, requiring them to manually upload to both TILvids AND #youtube We appreciate our creators going the extra mile, and please remember this is why it's so important to support alternative platforms.
I've often wondered why open-source orgs like @mozilla@nextcloud#Canonical and others don't take a more active role in the fediverse. All of those orgs should not only be actively running #Mastodon accounts, but should also be posting content to #PeerTube and honestly even running their own instances of both. In the case of Mozilla, it would make a ton of sense for them to host both Mastodon and PeerTube instances as an open alternative to Google.
Curious that YouTube sync stopped working on our #PeerTube instance a few weeks back, and now everyone is reporting that #YouTube downloader sites are no longer functioning.
"Do no harm" #Google showing the world what happens when a corporation has finally extinguished all real competition. Time is running out to make a difference... 🔥
PSA: #YouTube has begun blocking import on many hosts, including the one we use at TILvids. This means that auto-sync for channels will no longer work, which puts incredible pressure/effort on creators like @thelinuxEXP trying to make content available in multiple locations. Because of this, expect there to be some disruptions in content availability.
This is why it's so important to support non #Google software and services, because they are swiftly becoming a bad actor in the world of #tech
I just noticed I missed this pretty massive tidbit of information from @joinpeertube regarding the roadmap for #PeerTube
"…Official PeerTube mobile application (end of 2024)"
:amaze:
This has been a long-requested development from the PeerTube community, and something I hear from our #tilvids community all the time. What an exciting development from an amazing organization! 🙌
Anyway, all that to say...I completely hear what you're saying, and you're not wrong at all. Above all, I believe so strongly that creators should have more control over where/how their content is hosted, so they're not at the whims of Google. That's my main mission for what I'm trying to build with tilvids because it's what I want as a video creator.
Still waiting for our ISP (Contabo) to resolve their issue. They are having a problem at their datacenter in Dusseldorf that has been ongoing for almost 24 hours. You can keep track of their interruption here: https://contabo-status.com/
In the meantime, feel free to continue watching TILvids content at our mirror: https://cdn01.tilvids.com
They've been down a few times before. I would say they've averaged 24 hours of downtime in the last year that we've used them. This is by far the longest they've been down though. 24 straight hours of downtime is pretty bad, IMO.
Weird. Wonder if there are some geographic issues still or something. Glad it's working for you, and their page does say the issue is resolved as of an hour ago...
Maybe someone else can let me know if it looks like the site is up? Last time Contabo had a major downtime, my ISP somehow just completely lost the ability to connect to the site. I don't know if it was a DNS thing or something, but it took 4-5 days to get access back. Not a big deal to me, so long as the rest of the world can see the site.
Agree with everything you said about Contabo. Good service, good price...but I HAVE to be able to rely on them...
In watching the tech media sites fawn over the latest iDevices...I don't get it. I rode the entire wave of smartphones, from hacking early #Windows Mobile phones, through the intro of #iPhone & #Android, up to the present. It was amazing to watch these devices evolve and mature but every single announcement over the last few years has been iterative and boring...and that's perfectly fine, it's a mature industry. But how can you possibly get that excited anymore?
I know I'm in the minority, but I'd be much more excited to hear about how the device is repairable, does better at protecting privacy, lasts longer, etc.
