I clicked on eugen's mention of whoever ATmosseri is, so I could block the domain for threads easily.

Your Contribution to Support Knowable Magazine
Our crucial role in stimulating discussion about science Annual Reviews articles: Capture current understanding of a topic, including what is well supported and what is controversial; Set the work in historical context; Highlight the major questions that remain to be addressed and the likely course of research in upcoming years; and Outline the practical applications and general significance of research to society. Who uses Annual Reviews? Researchers who want to keep abreast of their field and integrate this information with their own activities; Researchers who want an introduction to new fields, with a view to developing an interface between different areas of research; Students at all levels who want to gain a thorough understanding of a topic; and Business people, journalists, policy makers, practitioners, patients and patient advocates, and others who wish to be informed about developments in research. Expert content curation Annual Review articles hold a unique place in the scholarly communication ecosystem because they transfer expert knowledge synthesized from the exponentially expanding corpus of scientific literature to scholars and society. To create this impactful content, we bring together expert Editorial Committees in each covered discipline and facilitate meetings where members can discuss trends in each field and select relevant topics for review. Authoritative authors are then invited to submit reviews, and they readily accept the challenge to help shape and define their field as a service to scholars and society. The number of Annual Review journals continues to grow over a broad range of disciplines within the Biomedical, Life, Physical, and Social Sciences, including Economics. The creation of a new title indicates that the amount of original research in a field has reached a critical mass.

@clacke Yes, the majority of the world's lentils come from all over - nearly 53%. I just find it astounding that canada supplies the rest.

@clacke I can't speak anything except the english I was born with. I try to read some other things like news items and fedi posts. The last couple of months I've been doing duolingo spanish and german in the morning and spanish and french in the afternoon. Some days my brain locks up and I can't come up with the simplest article in the right language! Meh. It's good for my sorry old brain to try hard anyhow.

Not BC. I assumed SK, no?

    edit:
" It is now widely grown in Canada, primarily in the province of Saskatchewan where the cooler temperatures of the prairies and good soil conditions support its growth. Some lentil production also occurs in the southern regions of Alberta."

    so, also you guys ;-)

@clacke I live in a different part of the country, so until recently I had no idea canada exported so much of the world's lentils!

Canada: US$1.6 billion (47.2% of total lentils exports)
    Australia: $766.2 million (22%)
    Türkiye: $537.1 million (15.5%)
    United States: $162 million (4.7%)
    India: $68.8 million (2%)
    Kazakhstan: $58.1 million (1.7%)
    Russia: $55.1 million (1.6%)
United Arab Emirates: $29.7 million (0.9%)
    Belgium: $22.5 million (0.6%)
    Netherlands: $17.6 million (0.5%)
    Myanmar: $10.3 million (0.3%)
    Egypt: $10.26 million (0.3%)
    Germany: $9.8 million (0.3%)
    Curaçao: $7.82 million (0.2%)
    Italy: $7.81 million (0.2%)

By value, the listed 15 countries shipped 97.9% of globally exported lentils in 2022.

If I could get better at just one thing that would help me learn more quickly, it would be admitting I was wrong sooner, owning up and saying sorry, my bad. Even to my former self!
That would be an improvement over gemlog v1.x with immediate benefit.
Until then, I can't make a new release.

@mpjgregoire Me either. so my 'special needs' guess, b/c of his huge following, might not have been far off.
In any case, even if it's OT, b/c I came in late :-) ...
I think pro writers should host their own instances. 5 bucks. Come on... commensurate with your donations. I can't think of a system more equitable.
I have my own fired up and ready to go, just as a geezer. My 'home' instance of tilde doesn't want/need donations as he's kept the size to his resources, but I think I did manage to sneak in a donation one time two years ago.
This is all self-organizing, co-operative stuff and I (wrongly) thought popehat was whinging about it.
Glad I took everyone off my post and you explained it to me!

    @mpjgregoire
I find myself unable to have sympathy for e.g. popehat's special needs. He's perfectly free to go to another platform and I wish him and the others mentioned well.
"Large-ish" accounts take up large-ish resources to service. There are other platforms where they can pay for their needs. Really, they should have their own fedi and use donations to fund it no? Same as any other professional writer. It's what makes them professionals.
Maybe I'm missing something though, I'm a bit tired these days.

@mpjgregoire I don't know! I only had that one post to go on - was that it, really?
Well, I rarely use them either, frankly.
However, the thing about huge accounts kind of free-loading is a thought in my mind.
I took them off the post, b/c I didn't know the context, which you've now corrected me about.
