The excellent @tilvids has created a nice simple video intro to Mastodon. You might find this useful as a basic explanation of how Mastodon works:

Why did LittleSnitch give me at least nine warnings while I was watching that video? ? And what is that "Watching this video may reveal your IP address to others" nonsense? ? -

FediTips has moved! (feditips@mstdn.social)'s status on Friday, 13-Jan-2023 04:04:39 JST FediTips has moved! I'm guessing it's confused by the peer to peer system.
PeerTube allows small servers to reach big audiences by using p2p. This means if you're watching and lots of other people are watching the same video, you pass bits of the video to each other to take the strain off the server.
In theory you might be able to see the IP address of somemone who is watching it at the same time as you, but in practice this is kind of tricky and you're not going to know who they are anyway.

TILvids (tilvids@mstdn.social)'s status on Friday, 13-Jan-2023 04:53:28 JST TILvids I can confirm, I have not added a single thing to #PeerTube outside of what comes with it. There should be (as far as I aware) zero tracking, etc. PeerTube does, however, use P2P connections to help lighten the load on servers, so that's likely what is causing those notifications.
This should be a setting you can disable if you have an account on TILvids (or any PeerTube instance) so that you don't act as a P2P node while watching videos.
