AI is legitimately going to fuck up technology and the Internet. Shit like "vibe coding" is going to be devastating for software development and resources taxation on hardware.

There is no such thing as a reality where hardware improves while software remains at a static or improving level of efficiency---software and code inefficiency and slop will, rather, increase to fill the resources surplus provided by gains in hardware development. Your computer will always run hot, will always have mediocre battery life, and will always perform "average" despite gains in hardware.

@frawst Old software and OSs run phenomenally well on contemporary hardware. We can write light, performant programs with efficient and sane code. We just don't. Because the hardware allows us to not have to.

They've hit the point where they are no longer spending money on user acquisition, but no one knows how to make it profitable yet, so you might not even have to wait until next year.

Really depends on who is funding the company.

It's a game of chicken: whoever stops spending money first loses. So the VCs that are pumping money into it will keep pumping money into it. The businesses you have named are not going to endanger their other more lucrative products to stay in the game. Google and Facebook have the cash, Microsoft is always willing to throw good money after bad. If I were betting, I'd say Microsoft wins this round. Facebook isn't really in this game: they keep dumping free models on the public in order to get the other companies to spend more money on AI and neglect the areas where Facebook actually wants to compete.

BTW Twitter as X will be profitable eventually once he gets Trump to legalize him turning it into Paypal 2.0.

The VCs don't depend on VC money, either. The VCs know who they're spending against, anyway. They're usually playing for an acquisition when this happens.

@r000t @p @adiz burning all that money was the entire point of OpenAI, and I suspect other companies have tried the same thing. They figured that if they built a 'moat', in the form of "we spend $100B to get this far", that they could effectively monopolize the market that way, because nobody would or could try to match it. The problem is, like with certain economic policies, is that eventually you run out of other people's data. So now they're left with an incredibly enormous industrial capacity for processing data into a model, where there's no more good new data to use. The Tiger tanks have no gasoline.

Massive hype attracts sociopaths, and they tend to be good at adding hype.

      > (whatever that is)

I've been putting on Hamming's lectures lately. (They were not properly ordered when I took the first pass, so I watched half of them and I don't know which half until I get ten or fifteen minutes in; not important.) Rewatched his lectures about AI, and one of his points was that nobody's got a satisfactory definition of "intelligence" or "thinking", and that, whether or not you believe in the possibility of a machine that is the equivalent of a human or you believe in a soul (he insisted that both beliefs will lead you to make big mistakes in your use of technology that will torch your career), the important thing to do is get comfortable with ambiguity, because it's going to get weird. I think he was overly optimistic about the timeline after which investors would jump back in (the lectures were from 1995, so not too long after the 80s AI crash), so it's nice to have run into it now. (He maintained that the question of whether a machine could do what a human does was pointless and that he was more interested in what humans using machines could do, and complained that this opinion was unpopular.)

      > things like AI driven cars and trucks are going to be very profitable.

I'm skeptical that this autonomous vehicles will work out before the end of 32-bit timers or that this is the most profitable use for this sort of thing. I mean, look at Roomba: Amazon offered just $1.7B (about 1% of OpenAI's valuation) for the company that has an effective monopoly on these tiny devices that still have trouble navigating a house. Look at the stock: https://www.nasdaq.com/market-activity/stocks/irbt . Boston Dynamics sold the Hyundai for $1.1B five years ago, and both of those companies have plenty of fat government contracts.

I was kinda generally morose when I realized the finance psychopaths had seized control of the spergs' last refuge and was wondering what would restore the natural order. These guys way, way over-investing in a hype bubble that promises an entire utopia that it has no hope of delivering, that's something that has a pretty good chance of restoring the natural order.

It was only a matter of time until some real programmers got around to optimizing it all.

As a general rule, if your solution is "giant matrices", then you are doing it wrong. Matrices are a very mathematician-minded approach that is seldom even vaguely efficient.

@Sophistifunk @p @prettygood @adiz @r000t @bonifartius they already shit their pants when deepseek came out.

they have built their whole play on the old industrialist tactic of "i have money and you don't so i get to dictate all terms" and then found out they've just been wasting their money on inefficiency :cat_sad:

A lot of the dotcom bubble was good faith nerds with no business acumen getting taken for a ride by VC and Management people who stole an earnest idea and turned it into a pump and dump
