   There's a recent video by @paigesaunders about why people should join Mastodon and the Fediverse.

   It takes a VERY different approach to other vids you may have seen.

   It's, um... very straight-talking with some strong language 😱 and it's written by someone who found Mastodon too confusing. This is possibly its strength though, as it may reach people that others cannot.

   Anyway, see what you think, and if you know someone who might find it useful share it with them:

     but I really really agree about fediverse.
     if we can avoid billionaires, we should do it.

     Yeah, agreed, that part was my biggest problem with the video.

     But the rest of it is so sharp and effective that overall thought it would be good to spread the word about it.

     And he does go on to explain about moving to other servers and why having other servers is great, so if you watch whole thing it does get you thinking about multiple servers.

     @feditips @paigesaunders I ultimately dig that this is done in a way that’s more tonally diverse (this kind of video sure appeals to a different crowd than most I’ve seen), but I wish the advice wasn’t to just sign up for mastodon.social. I feel like if that continues to get bigger they’re going to have the same kind of moderation and content problems that traditional, non-fedi socials have.

     There should usually be a timeline within the video itself which you can click on if you want to skip forward or backward. Guessing the timeline isn't visible on method you're using? 😦

     BlueSky and Threads do not federate with anyone, despite all the pre-launch hype they had about doing so.

     They are both conventional centralised social networks owned by billionaires.

     The "other server" option on BlueSky doesn't do anything, you are forced to sign up on BlueSky's only server.

     I subscribed to his peertube channel from my mastodon account, which is a thing you can do with ActivityPub. You can't do that with X. I don't know about BlueSky or Threads, but I doubt it works there either.

     Suggesting a server at signup is fine! 👍

     The only danger is if it's always the same server being suggested, and if it's the largest server being suggested.

     If they could rotate the suggested server occasionally, from a pool of reliable servers with good track records stretching back years, that would do a lot to protect the Fediverse without complicating things for new people.

     "I don't know which server to sign up on" is the very first "WTF this is confusing" that potential Mastodoners face.

     If you have better, less confusing advice, than "just use mastodon.social", please share it.

     The danger of everyone being on one server, is that it then becomes extremely easy for some rich nasty person to buy the server and take over the network.

     If we're spread out on multiple servers, that's a lot harder for anyone to take over, and the network would stay in the hands of the community.

     You can at the moment, but if someone nasty took over a server, they could switch off that server's ability to migrate its accounts elsewhere.

     It's not a binary choice between m.s and small instancces, there are lots of instances between those extremes.

     The most important thing is that people do not gather on the same instance, that would threaten the Fediverse.

     Definitely, that's why I suggested people should share the video with others if they think it would be useful.

     You can post links to PeerTube on other social networks like Twitter, Facebook etc plus DMs on messaging, in emails etc.

     @feditips @paigesaunders While I enjoyed watching this take - I think you are posting to people who already (mostly) understand Mastodon/Federation/Fediverse - This video really needs to be trending on places like twitter and youtube - which I think may help some of the "fear" of change people have. That being said, I'm boosting - so I will add to more people who use mastodon seeing it 🙂

     There's a little-used admin feature on Mastodon called "limited federation mode" which cuts off connections to other servers, wonder if that might be a potential switch?

     But yeah, hopefully would be some kind of warning sign that makes people leave while still possible! 🤞

     @feditips Anything "more conventional" that includes the part explaining why they need to switch and what makes the Fediverse so different (and better) than those networks they're staying tied to? Language aside, Saunders explained those things really well.

     Masto wouldn't scare off so many people, if the simpler online interface was the default, instead of the "advanced" one.

     Wouldn't it make more sense to let a new user start with the twitter/bluesky-similar layout, and then let them switch to the column version later, if they want?

     Most people I know who immediately abandoned Masto didn't have the time or patience to discover you could switch it off in preferences. They just took one look and bailed.

     The simpler interface is the default, it has been for years.

     Are you seeing the advanced interface by default? That shouldn't be happening if that's the case.

     Someone else on mastodon.social mentioned something similar, I assume there is a bug on mastodon.social?

     When I signed up online, this box was ticked. I hated the "advanced" UI, so after a few days I went and unticked it. Not everyone gets that far, they just leave instead.

     The default on mastodon is the box is unticked. If it's ticked, then there's a bug causing it.

     As far as I can tell, this has only happened on mastodon.social, which is used by the developers for testing experimental features. It's possible their experiments have broken something related to the box being unticked.
