People also don't understand that Usenet hosters are legally protected under Common Carrier. That's why all the Usenet providers in USA haven't been raided and shut down.
@feld simple - just don't download fresh new stuff off public popular trackers. Use private trackers, use less popular trackers, use foreign (rutracker) trackers, or just don't download fresh new stuff and wait couple of years.
@feld the rest of the world doesn't have this problem, but as you mention in the thread, the ghetto S3 bucket that is USENET in the states is the best option
but uploading happens while you're downloading and torrent clients that intentionally block that should get rejected from the swarm. Or at least at one time that specific feature was being worked on. I swear it became a thing, though.
@feld@7666 let me detail my process: I have a seedbox. I am too lazy to use the seedbox. I let a friend use the seedbox all they want, in exchange I ask them to find and download stuff for me, and they do it.
@feld@Moon this really doesn't seem fundamentally different from just grabbing a torrent off a tracker (private or otherwise) except for the underlying download protocol
@bot@feld@7666 I was pirating, then I got Netflix because it was easier and had tons of movies. then Starz removed their movies from Netflix in 2011 and I couldn't get the movies I wanted to see anymore so I just went back to pirating. Now we are back to dozens of mediocre streaming services, fuck them.
@bot@feld@7666@Moon Some of us cut cheques directly to artists they support, when sending them fan mail, to pay them for the mp3's we downloaded.
The idea came from PayLars.com back in the day, when Metalligreed started suing their fans.
Movies, though? I'm not paying money to a megacorporation so I can digest their war propaganda, and I frankly consider anyone who does to be legally retarded.
Um yea if ppl spent their time and resources making something you enjoyed, you should pay them for their work. This commie tranny paradise you’re envisioning is delusional.
@7666@feld@KitlerIs6@bot@Moon most of the money doesnt actually reach the people who made it just the execs, yeah. some academics recommend you use stuff like scihub because they dont actually receive the fees you pay for scientific papers. and most will send you the paper for free if you ask them nicely
@bot@feld@KitlerIs6@Moon i'd rather donate directly to the people who made it than contribute to the two dozen middlemen involved in shafting the artists and extracting profit from their hard work
surely even you can see that the entire chain from conception to production to distribution is poisoned by wealth hoarding, self serving execs
No. That’s like saying Starbucks employees should have a union, it’s dumb because their “skill” is literally operating a coffee machine. The light reflector ppl voluntarily agree to the terms of their employment.
They do. Every single Starbucks employee is free to take their coffee pouring skills and start their own coffee business that pays all of their employees $45 an hour (plus benefits!) to operate a coffee machine. Or to work for a competitor, and there are many.
@meso@feld@7666@KitlerIs6@bot if you put up capital you should get a bigger return than people that just worked for wages but everyone should still get a cut morally.
@feld >not getting caught by their ISP My ISP knows I torrent all the time. If it's something important (e.g., a very recent movie), they send me a complaint email, then proceed to do nothing. They send out thousands upon thousands of those emails every day.
tbf I think starbux employees probably have it relatively good compared to many other industries. Sure it might not be what I'd want for society but it's kinda rich when you hear those types complaining about their working conditions when a lot of people with much harder jobs have lower wages and/or worse conditions.
@feld That's like OpenBSD being based in Canada, so that it wasn't subjected to US export restrictions, and US developers having to cross the border to "legally" install OpenBSD.
You could probably buy everything you need to start a mobile coffee business for like $1000. They may have to stop buying weed for a few months but it’s doable.
Anyway, the idea that Starbucks employees can dictate their terms of employment doesn’t work because they’re easily replaceable. Skilled labour striking is effective because they aren’t, that’s the difference.
1. People who work at starbucks work at starbucks because they don't have much money. And since they work at starbucks they *won't* have much money anytime soon. So they are completely priced out of starting a competitor (if their contract even allows them to).
2. Companies which try to pay their workers a fair wage have to compete with companies that abuse their workers and hire immigrants. Granted usually there's room in corporate profits to pay workers better, but if you are publicly traded you can't just pay your workers whatever you want because your investors get to tell you what to do.
2.5. Even if you do treat your workers right, manage to turn a profit and grow your business, you will be growing much slower and forced into a niche due to other companies having an economic advantage of using pseudo slave labor.
3. Usually people who are making shit wages don't have a lot of free time. They work long hours or multiple jobs and live paycheck to paycheck. Sometimes this is the result of overspending, a lot of times it isn't. This means they don't have much time to search for better jobs (and you do have to search for them as better jobs are rare to find since everyone wants one). They also don't have much time to learn new skills to branch out into different industries.
I can get 5gbit right now, 10gbit coming soon (and up to 25gbit allegedly slated for 2025-ish) but I don't see a point in upgrading to 5gbit at the moment. I know my server's NVMEs could handle the downloads anyway...
What you guys are basically arguing for is a state enforced system that guarantees a certain quality of life for unskilled workers. It’s called minimum wage, but that’s also complicated.
@bot@meso@feld@KitlerIs6@Moon you're on the right track here but in an opposite light: highly skilled/qualified workers don't have as much pressure to unionize because they can leverage their skills to their benefit or threaten to go elsewhere, forcing the employer into a mutually beneficial arrangement
replaceable workers absolutely need unions or they will be trampled upon because the employer can go "i'll just replace you lmao" because the training period and HR overhead is far lower for these workers - forcing the worker, who is likely far more vulnerable due to their status, to accept abusive compromises or be thrown out the door, unable to feed themselves / their family
when every corporation hiring "unskilled" workers does this, the illusion of choice becomes quite apparent
It is stealing, just in an abstract way. If you hire someone to like clean your gutters or something and then refuse to pay them, have you done something wrong in your opinion? You didn’t physically take anything from them!!!
You'd also need a business license and probably a food specific license and a permit to sell as mobile food businesses have a lot of regulations. You'd need contacts and contracts with suppliers, and most importantly you'd need a lot of money to pay for your own expenses for the first few months to few years that you aren't profitable.
But I don't disagree that it's impractical for low skill laborers to unionize, at least in an open boarders multiculti "country". If we lived in a proper nation it might be different.
It’s an oversimplification obv but many ppl have started successful businesses with very few resources. Most ppl just don’t have the drive or ability to do it tho.
@bot in that case you didn't pay your workers, in what you are describing all the workers have already been paid, some capitalist are hoping to steal your money they didn't earn.
That doesn’t make any sense. It’s so tiring coming up with examples that clueless autistics can understand.
It’s like if a developer builds a skyscraper… it takes stupid amounts of money to make that happen. Then you come in and say, “hey, why are you charging me money to lease this space??? It already exists, and the workers have been paid!!!!! This is an outrage!!!! Why isn’t it free, or as cheap as renting space in a two story building???!!”
So you think it’s reasonable for Starbucks workers to kill their executives when they can no longer afford to buy their marijuana every month AND pay their rent?
It just doesn’t make any sense. I don’t even understand the point. Like creative work has no value? Or all creative work is equally valuable? (It’s not btw).
My only guess is shortsightedness combined with blind hatred of anyone with money at all. Marxist types really baffle me, I've had them call me "the worst conservative ever" after I said we should take money from billionaires to pay for social services instead of taking over half the income of people who make $100k a year.
I guess they just really hate successful people that they thing society should be structured around spiting them
You’re wrong (as usual) it’s about the same, but the difference is that Denmark isn’t full of n words so dem programz aren’t a complete waste of taxpayer funds.
The dirty little secret of "benefits" in the US is that if you stay at a homeless shelter (at least in my city) the shelter takes 42% of your income for "the cost of living there". Lol Tyrone don't even get as many benefits as most conservatives think 😅
LaQueesha is taking the ambeelance 4 times a month to go to the hospital because her fatass can't stop shoveling food down ther oversized gullet. Or she's getting dem benifeets for her keeds. Or food stamps ect.
@KitlerIs6 This is true - I went to my cities budget meeting and 53% of all collected taxes go to emergency medical services and 49% of all the taxes come from property tax.
In my state every single dollar of property taxes goes to bring laqueesha to the hospital for the 7th heart attack.
Also, laqueesha could go to the actual doctor, but is too illiterate to fill out the paperwork and instead goes to the emergency room (for the same care but like triple the price).
I'm not saying there is a shortage of morbidly obese White's. But obesity, heart disease, diabetes and a myriad of diseases are the result of taco niggers and niggers.
Yeah I've done a little bit of research and it seems like taxes there are very low even compared to America. Issue there is more lack of jobs in the first place from what I've seen.
There are lots of free clinics in the US, one of my exes used to work for the cities "diversity and equality department" and their biggest problem was literally that the minority communicates couldn't understand the paperwork or the difference between urgent care and a normal doctors office. 😅 Like the free services don't get used. because people don't actually understand the difference...
@Tony@tk@feld@get@gnu2@KitlerIs6@bot for what it's worth public services are pretty damn good here, especially healthcare. if they'd just be annoying to rich people instead of poor people about taxes thatd be real nic
Rich people don't make income though. They use asset holdings to get loans and pay for things instead of taking an income.
At least in the US. Everyone bitches about rich people "paying their fair share" but the reality is that their tax returns don't actually show them making any money.
They fund their life styles with debt and credit, so they are technically always in the red.
The systems are set up this way so the middle class funds most of the taxes.
That’s literally why niggers pay virtually zero taxes in the US and why the top 1% pay upwards of 40% of the tax burden. Why do you keep embarrassing yourself?
@Tony @bot @feld @tk @meso @get @KitlerIs6 the middle class is a lie by the boss class to keep the working class fighting among ourselves rather than fighting back against their class war. It's not about money, it's about control.
To be fair the tax code is one giant loophole for business owners and rich people.
Like it is hilarious how easy it is.
I drive like 40K miles per year (travel for work) and the US tax code allows for .67 cents per mile of write offs. So, each year I write off the first $26,800 I make and then because I'm a business owner and am subject to marginal tax rates, I don't pay anything until I cross 12000 in declared income.
Long story short, my tax rate up to around 40K is 0 lol
The "make rich people pay their fair share" is the most hilarious propaganda I have every heard in my life. They never will because they change boring laws like mileage reimbursements that no one cares about...
In real estate the purchase of an asset (multi family building) is considered a write off as it is a business expense.
So, I put 250K towards a 20 unit apartment building, I then hold the building for 10 years and my initial investment of 250K (which was a write off in the first place) is now worth 500k. I sell the asset and oh, no capital gains tax.
UNLESS I DO A 1029 EXCHANGE AND PURCHASE ANOTHER ONE! The 500K is now an expense, I get a write off and pay no capital gains tax on the gains because of the tax code.
If you time it correctly you can just roll real estate purchases bigger and bigger and never pay a cent in taxes.
LOOKING AT YOU BLACK ROCK AND YOUR TRILLION DOLLAR INVESTMENTS
Like the level of trolling that is happening via the tax code is SO MUCH WORSE than anyone even understand lmao
Same…been slamming bang energies too late in the day and staying up until like 3am and then I’m so tired I have two more the next day and the cycle repeats
>the top 1% pay upwards of 40% of the tax burden Lmao not it's middle class Whites, rich niggers and nigger niggers need to pay their fair share (all of it because they don't belong anyway)
Ok so the 40% rate comes only from federal income tax, which is heavily biased towards poor people paying less compared to other taxes such as social security, sales tax, and property taxes.
Income tax was 53% of the federal revenue in 2022 (https://www.taxpolicycenter.org/statistics/percentage-revenue-source) while social security is 30%, and the latter cannot be avoided if you are poor as they still take it out of your paycheck. So already we're off to a bad start on "The 1% pay 40%", as it's 40% of 53% of federal income which doesn't even include state taxes.
Also this is the source for the 40% figure (which is really 40% of 35%), it shows that the next 49% after the top 1% are paying 56% of taxes. Again though, this is only about 35% of taxes, and the 35% that most heavily leans on the rich instead of the poor. If you look at that other post's image you'll also see that on a state level the middle 60% get fucked the hardest on state taxes proportionally.
But basically a tl;DR is that the 40% number comes from picking the one and only tax where the rich are taxed heavily and the poor are exempt, while ignoring all the other tax sources which make up the majority of government income which either poor people aren't exempt from (social security) or actually impact poor people more (property and sales)
https://www.self.inc/info/life-of-tax/ Here's another source that more directly looks at what % of total taxes paid is from each category. Only 14% is income related tax while over 50% is sales tax. So for the average person, only 14% of their paid taxes are paid using the progressive income tax system, while the remainder is paid through more regressive means.
Social security/medicaid taxes are fucking rough, if you've ever worked a low income job and seen how much of your money went to that shit with no way of getting it back you'd know what I mean.
Also, social security/medicaid double dip and your employer has to pay the same amount you do, which means they pass that cost onto you by lowering your wages. This is another hidden tax that is not counted in that 40% figure. Also, like property and sales tax, it's both somewhat regressive (poor people pay bigger %) and a much bigger proportion of what poor people pay than what rich people pay.
