I've only been to Malaysia (where my family are from ) twice in my life, but one thing I remember is everything was open well into the middle of the night (especially food, and even random things like DIY supplies, they were all sold together in the corner shops)
@alice@lrhodes I remember GNUsocial - was even told about it in about 2010/2011
A lot of it seemed to be "absolute free speech" which mostly consisted of anarchists and rightwing edgelords bitterly arguing at each other in English, German and Swedish all at the same time and it was quite frankly a hostile environment (even though I can understand German quite well) and no better than anything else available at the time, compared to modern Fedi the LGBT+ folk and furries built over the years (and wrestled away large parts of control from centrist techbros)
I wouldn't sign up to this because Ursula is there, any more than I'd willingly listen to the Christian Schlager pop record she made with her family in the 1960s 😁
GM fixed these quite quickly (ISTR it was a few months ago) - I pretended to be a redneck and asked them what truck was best to take my snakes to church (in a mostly suburban part of USA where this isn't even /that/ common) and it gave some fairly sensible answers that this wasn't approved of and could be against state and federal wildlife protection laws, but still suggested some mid size pickups and tried to set me up with a sales contact to view a truck anyway 😁
@benroyce I was initially confused by the Indonesian subtitles and even wondered if the gig was in Indonesia - which would be a remarkable softening of the regime there as at least in some regions such things are considered haram, although there is still a significant underground punk scene there hence the subtitles..
@alice I think there's at least a solar panel for power and a decent lithium battery from the pictures of those I've seen, and if the camera/CCD can be separated from the motherboard that can be repurposed too (it would *not* be a good idea to apply power to the mobo away from site as it may well contain GNSS receiver and LTE modem and send alarm)
A Neo-Nazi teenage girl tried to behead a Kurdish barber in #Bristol as a vigilante act against #immigrants and a belief the barbershop was involved in money laundering.
She but failed as he was physically larger and managed to disarm her, and #Police were nearby and quickly arrested her - she pleaded guilty in #Court and has been sent to #prison for 15 years
What is also worrying is Bristol is considered to be one of the safer, more multicultural cities of #England
@skinnylatte some folk were calling this out - also I find it less accurate (although I mostly buy kitbags/tactical bags rather than rucksacks) as if I've found if you avoid the big American brands and pick the middle price point Chinese ones the bags are decent enough.
Same with spectacles, there's affordable frames in UK/Europe provided you don't go for "bling" brands and even discounts on lenses (and I am highly nearsighted)
As for power tools, I use Makita and it turns out that many are assembled in the UK (so I'm even supporting local manufacturing industry!)
@ChrisWere stuff like that puts me off (as a brown person) getting involved in or even just visiting these things.
I know the modern car scene in towns/cities is a bit more multicultural, but I don't want to get lumped in either with those who drive badly, have obnoxious mods such as loud exhausts and are often climate change deniers..
If the mobile device was SIM free (or the address would be needed to set up the SIM contract), I'm surprised the shop assistant was prepared to dig their heels in and lose the sale (and potentially any commission)
I do wonder if the shop had been leaned on by another authority to capture this info due to paranoia about mobiles being used by drug dealers (which may have been the case around late 90s to early 2000s).
Even Tandy had given up asking for your address by the mid-late 90s (at least you got a catalogue and free batteries that way)
@skinnylatte bizzarely every time I've been to a USA public service website to try and help friends there with adulting stuff (assuming that I'm not outright blocked for trying to access from a foreign country, which is very common nowadays), it looks like they've used the cheapest commercial service possible to deliver the actual service (maybe the budgets are swallowed by multiple layers of management and outsourcing contracts) and UI is different across every service/state or even local region (although maybe in UK we are used to having a *very* good govt web UI, although behind the scenes the services are run on string and gaffer tape and everything feeds into Azure databases and MS365)
@skinnylatte Canada is more than likely to try UK tactics with a USA public sector budget, so it most probably *is* Excel (possibly with VBA, or worse a whole load of VLOOKUP/INDEX functions all nested) being used to make the decisions..
@gemlog this was only there because my employers use MS365 (in normal use they would be unlikely to open 2 browsers at once, and I'd only done it to see if it would even work and to download a couple of files from OneDrive)
@gemlog I suspect it would only take one memory leak in either of the 2 browsers simultaneously running (both Firefox and Edge) *or* the Dropbox client to cause the whole lot to fall over, and because its intermittent and every dev is chasing features/AI/adtech rather than reliability no one really cares about tracking down the exact cause..
@gemlog I did a quick check (although not the full 8 gig of RAM), although I suspect more that I left lots of random tabs open on 2 browsers when I went to the shop as well as Dropbox trying to pull 100 gigs of various files down the network at the same time..
Now I have reconfigured the Dropbox client for a more limited set of directories and have Anydesk running I've left the PC switched on and connected to the network so I can keep an eye on it remotely to see if it behaves..
Got smol SSD drive (250GB) and restarted #LinuxMint experiment (old #desktop was laggy using spinning rust) - this is actually now a usable PC!
Office #printer once again detected by #CUPS with driverless install, built in software handled printing a large graphics-intensive PDF well.
Both #Firefox and #Edge running without problems (only reason I have Edge on here is to test how well it works with if #MS365)
Only minor drawback is #Dropbox#Linux client wants to download entire Dropbox to the hard drive (which will fill it up very quickly), it doesn't have the "save hard drive space" functionality on #Windows
This would now be good enough to use as backup PC for general (non technical) office staff (many use web MS365 apps a lot more than desktop these days!)
Went to the village shop to get some food and returned to find the PC fully locked up ( needed a power cycle to restart!)
I suspect this is more fault of #browsers with multiple tabs left open (there's an open issue for this on #Firefox) than any flaw with #LinuxMint itself, on top of websites being more bloated and #adtech scripts and #adblockers fighting one another.
Successfully installed #Anydesk on #Linux PC, so can access #XFCE desktop remotely from my Windows laptop (we use Anydesk a lot for remote support)
