Very not used to shops closing on Sundays and having to scramble to get food supplies. I understand why it happens, I’m just not used to it.
I’m also not used to having food abundance and access at all times of the day and night but that’s a whole other thing. Can’t wait to get back to Malaysia in a couple of days for the first time in a long time.

@vfrmedia @skinnylatte this sounds nice! My family is from Tonga (South Pacific) and stores are completely closed on Sunday like in parts of Europe.
But people are still up in the night doing things, but at home or in church halls.

I've only been to Malaysia (where my family are from ) twice in my life, but one thing I remember is everything was open well into the middle of the night (especially food, and even random things like DIY supplies, they were all sold together in the corner shops)

@skinnylatte my sister-in-law from Malaysia said something similar about the US. She asked me why things close so early. She also thinks the suburbs are too quiet lol

i once met a young singaporean who had never lived abroad and she was living briefly in a suburb outside palo alto for a work thing
she was deeply anxious about having to get into a car to procure any kind of food
it was so bad that she decided she couldn't live there and she moved to new york city
it reminded me a lot of me ahahhaha

i don't think people understand:
when i go home to my parents' home, i can go 'downstairs' (from the 40th floor) of their building, and there are 3 supermarkets, 2 wet markets, so groceries from 5am to 2am, and probably hundreds, not even exaggerating, of food stalls at all hours
so going from that to.. whatever it is other people do, is very very challenging

@vfrmedia @b most of the 3am eating happens because people like watching european soccer. we also have tons of 24/7 coffee shops with drinks and food that are obvious late night / soccer / supping places.

@skinnylatte @b in UK even if you are someone who is habitually awake late at night due to work patterns (such as truck driver, on call tech support and maintenance, or just someone who keeps odd hours) its near impossible to get decent food here (only USA style hamburger retaurants and kebabs, and none of that is healthy)

@jf_718 the japanese, chinese, senegalese and other multicultural foods in paris are wonderful. there's better ramen in paris than in sf.

@skinnylatte Paris can be like that to a degree. I have family in France and one of my cousins had a tiny apartment (former maid room, elevator stopped one floor below) and I think it was 100 sqft at most. But go downstairs and there were three boulangeries in the same block and multiple grocery stores (plus restaurants). For over a week our daily ritual was to get up early to get fresh croissants and/or a baguette from one of the boulangeries. Coupled with French butter... Yum. We bought other stuff, but the bread/butter was heavenly.
So if I have to leave NYC, Paris would do fine food-wise for me.

@jf_718 13e is still super lively and chinese. i really like it. it's one of the only places where i hear teochew / chiu chow organically in the world

it's also extremely common to say, go out for a roti canai at 2am
or a freshly made naan and nihari
or nasi lemak
or all of them at the same time
like actually leaving your home at 2am to meet people to do it

@skinnylatte not at 2am but I've certainly had roti canai and nasi lemak at the same meal
but roti canai and naan sounds redundant
never heard of nihari but just looked it up and it sounds really good, ¡thank you!
