@dalias I'm glad I dropped out of the computer industry in about 1991, near the start of what might have been an interesting career, so, not by choice, but even so, I might have had a problem, because I do have a conscience, so would have been forced out sooner or later. At least the ethical issues of being a bus driver are a lot more clear-cut.

@GreenSkyOverMe @farah not up to date. All children now need to attend school until 18, so have to attend sixth-form or some college.

@GreenSkyOverMe @farah yeah, the distinction between living/not living isn't as clearcut as we always thought. Even humans can be in an indeterminate state at times. (Some would say Trump is already there.) Like the distinction between animals and plants: it's difficult to firmly put fungi in either.

Maybe some of my intelligent friends on here can help: If I try to entice some crows to eat, how many do I have to persuade before it becomes a tempted murder?

@idlestate why support carbon capture. This was a rebrand of an earlier tech that the fossil fuel industry came up with to stave off the renewables from undercutting them by fixing the market in their favour for a bit longer.

@Fragglemuppet The vast majority of people have very mixed motives, some unconscious, for doing anything. We should still celebrate and be thankful. And whenever someone does something for you, it's a prompt for passing it on by doing something for someone else.

@fkamiah17 Even if that were literally true, what is wrong with hating a state that was set up by colonialists, overriding the rights of existing citizens, and has carried out (and is still) genocide?

Currently sat in Chesterfield station, on the first leg of travel of our holiday (okay, we've already taken two buses to get her). Train is to Newcastle, then shuttle bus to ferry terminal, overnight to Amsterdam, then train to Amiens (via Paris), where we are spending 6 nights, before returning via Lille and Eurostar, then back to Mansfield. Anyone fancy meeting up in France?

@mav The reason for that is that, should a FOSS version be produced, they will either be bought out by the owners of the format, or sued by them, or rendered unusable by random or targeted changes to the format. Since PDF is a proprietary format, it would be better if the FOSS community developed an alternative format that does the same job, and put the format definition into the public domain, with an advisory committee set up to develop it.

@tim you couldn't make it up. Octopus seems to be a bit erratic with billing. We have been with them for some years now. Every now and again, they forget to bill us (or credit us) for one of the three things they should (Gas usage, Electric usage and Electric export). Last bill time (the 19th), the gas and Export were fine. Until after the end of the month, there was a statement saying that some items were being manually reviewed, so I expected the Electric bill to appear eventually. 1/2

@lowqualityfacts Definitely an underestimate.

@wmd @vaurora I 'm not sure - it seems to me that many small-scale water-driven turbines in old mills and on streams is precisely where local differences could be made. Larger-scale hydro schemes need hillier terrain. And wind is still not taken advantage of as much as it could be (I remember a few years back, sceptics saying that wind would never make a significant difference to the UK's power grid, it now often produces 30-45percent)
