In 1993, a local politician in Amstelveen, a suburb of Amsterdam, got so bored with city council meetings, which frequently went on till late at night, that he submitted a motion to the council: whenever a meeting goes on past 11 PM, the members of the council are entitled to a "kroket" (a popular deep-fried snack).
To his surprise, the motion passed and was even adopted by other city councils.
The man himself, Jan Peter Balkenende, eventually became the prime minister of the Netherlands.
You know those evidence boards that cops use in TV shows, where they have lots of photos, headlines and sticky notes connected with red yarn?
My theory is that actual cops don't actually use such boards... but that writers of TV shows do, while brainstorming their character arcs and plot developments.
I just learned that in 1963, some guy in Turkey was renovating his house when he found a hidden room behind a wall. He started exploring and discovered what would turn out to be a complete underground city, 85 meters deep and big enough to hold 20,000 people. This is the underground city of Derinkuyu, built some 1000 years ago by the local population to hide from invaders.
I just discovered that a French philosopher called Regis Debray, a personal friend of Che Guevara's, wrote a 40-page essay called "Against Venice," basically an anti-travel guide explaining why you should avoid the capital of tackiness at all cost. https://app.thestorygraph.com/books/501b9313-b0c8-455a-bba5-e12be1aeed5d
In these difficult times, it's easy to assign blame. But who are the real culprits? In this article, I examine the merits behind various claims about where to place blame: the Bossa Nova (Gormé 1963), the Boogie (Jackson et al. 1978), and the rain (Vanilli 1989).
@river Thanks for asking --I think it's a safe bet that most people around here are opposed to Trumpism and populism. But the type of response to it is, in my opinion, best summarized as "hippies" (a soft approach based on peace, love and understanding) versus "punks" (a harder approach that is less willing to compromise and happy to be on the opposite side of Trumpism). I would count myself on the "punks" side.
