It's kinda remarkable that, of all the things we could really use, there is no open source mobile friendly #PDF annotation/filling tool. And the paid software that's out there is both shockingly dysfunctional and crazy expensive.

Just wild that like after 30 years of PDFs we don't even have the most basic tools for this format.

@UkeleleEric @mav Sued and rendered unusable by changes are not really plausible outcomes, but "bought out" sadly is.

The mobile ecosystems, with walled garden app stores that force a lot of ugly, non-FOSS-friendly infrastructure to make it easy for normal folks to get your application, make projects ripe for getting bought out, because "ownership" of the app gives access to push new versions with malvertising etc. to users' devices, exploiting existing trust by users, and makes it hard/impossible for the existing users to stick with a FOSS fork.

@mav The reason for that is that, should a FOSS version be produced, they will either be bought out by the owners of the format, or sued by them, or rendered unusable by random or targeted changes to the format. Since PDF is a proprietary format, it would be better if the FOSS community developed an alternative format that does the same job, and put the format definition into the public domain, with an advisory committee set up to develop it.
