UkeleleEric@mav The reason for that is that, should a FOSS version be produced, they will either be bought out by the owners of the format, or sued by them, or rendered unusable by random or targeted changes to the format. Since PDF is a proprietary format, it would be better if the FOSS community developed an alternative format that does the same job, and put the format definition into the public domain, with an advisory committee set up to develop it.
