Wow, there are almost 400 people following me now. That's crazy! :blobcatfearful: I've only been here for about 2 months.

I was active on Twitter for years and had about 300 followers.

I've also had more and better conversations on Mastodon, in a fraction of the time.

I still post similar things as I did there: be kind, be gay/do crime, value your privacy and data, don't get pwned, fuck capitalism, here's a kitten picture.

But instead of getting a few likes, I get perspectives and interesting conversations with all sorts of people.

I like it here. ?

Hey all,

I hate asking for anyone to boost any of my posts, but this is an exception. I want the biggest sample size I can get, and it's a niche request, so I need some help with reach.

I want to recommend a book to a couple parents I know, but wanted some feedback on which one first.

This is for the parents of a teen with ADHD. The teen's father is more authoritarian, while the mother's parenting style is more collaborative.

The two options I think would benefit them most are:

"How To Talk So Kids Will Listen & How To Listen So Kids Will Talk" by Adele Faber & Elaine Mazlish

"The Explosive Child" by Ross Greene

I think both options are great books, but I also have a pretty limited expertise here (outside of my own experience and reading).

I was completely disengaged with classes during high-school. I found them too easy to study for and too boring to bother with. I'd show up to pass the tests, then skip again. It got bad.

A counselor helped me get into Running Start (college classes for college and high-school credits). I found the classes interesting and the atmosphere much more suitable to my brain's wiring. I ended up graduating with high honors and a near 4.0.

I don't know if it would help your son, but it might be worth talking with him about it if that—or a similar—program is available where you are.

There's a real problem faced by "highly-capable" or "gifted" kids:

Things are easy for them, until they're not.

And when things get difficult, it's often because the kid coasted by on their IQ without developing the skills they'd need when things got more complex than they were able to brute-force with their brains.

I know this happened to me, and it's only as an adult that I learned more about why.

Autism is often co-morbid with executive function impairment and atypical sensory-processing.

Learning skills to help counter executive functioning issues and techniques to deal with over-stimulus when it comes to task completion can dramatically improve quality of life and burnout issues with tasks that suddenly seem to be too great to surmount.

Take this with some salt, I transitioned from psychology to computer science half-way through my college career.
