@SuperDicq@minidisc.tokyo I keep saying someone needs to produce a modern Thinkpad designed and built like the old Thinkpads, but with modern + libre components and firmware. @chjara@snowdin.town

@lain@lain.com We're not permitted to fly internationally without valid passports for all passengers. Could be different my company/country, but that's definitely not happening here with my carrier. We're not about to put our neck out to get roasted by customs/immigration and potentially face penalties. @rin@post.ebin.club

@TheCrossCulturalNerd@universeodon.com And:Heck, WeChat is more essential to daily life in China than Facebook is in America.I would not call Facebook "essential". WeChat basically is, in far more respects. You use it to not just to message people, but entire businesses run on it. It's an entire suite of services. You can book train tickets with it, order food over it, pay for things with it, etc.. It's not solely a social media application. @Deus@charcha.cc @yogthos@mas.to

@TheCrossCulturalNerd@universeodon.com If they ban WeChat it will effectively be a racist policy against Chinese people living in the United States, including ABCs, considering WeChat is the most popular application for communicating and keeping up with family back home. @yogthos@mas.to

@feld@bikeshed.party Tipping only exists in the United States and Canada (if I remember correctly). I don't really understand the origins, but it's a pretty ridiculous concept. Employees should be paid equitably for their service and tipping should not exist as an expectation by patrons to subsidize paycheck owed to employees by their employers. I remember I had a friend come visit me in China, and he left money on the table after we left---the waitress chased us down to return his money to him, thinking it was a mistake he left his money behind. Alternatively, at least in China, tipping may even be considered offensive in the sense that one is trying to make a statement that an employee is poor or something. A lot of this goes into the vague and nuanced concept of "face". But, still, outside of the West, it's foreign as a concept. Patrons shouldn't be expected to subsidize wages. Wages should simply be equitable. If that means that services are more expensive, so be it.

@thomasfuchs@hachyderm.io There are other, better instance softwares than Mastodon that provide features you're looking for (like quote posts). Calckey is one such software. Some of the requests you're making, however, are completely against how ActivityPub works and should work, e.g. "Restrictions on who can reply to a post". @Gargron@mastodon.social

@Jain@blob.cat I'm not opposed to federating with corporate networks if they embrace federation or protocols like ActivityPub. Just as long as they do not mine our data or harvest our information.

@newt@stereophonic.space If god had wanted decaffeinated coffee he would have had coffee plants produce supercritical CO2 to circulate through the beans whilst still on the plant!

@c060b31fe2bbb0be4d393bc7c40a80848a25b8f0e0f382cb5b49c37bf7476cb4@mostr.pub I don't really understand the importance of cryptographic identities. I'd actually argue that cryptographic identities, like what BlueSky argues for, only serves as a means of tying real identity to user account in an immutable way that reduces the opportunity for anonymity and primarily benefits those interested in tracking and data harvesting (think, targeted advertisements, e.g.). We've gone decades without cryptographic identities, nor any glaring, missing vacancy asking for cryptographic identities. I know it's a bit sensational to claim that Web3 doesn't have to involve "muh blockchains" and "muh cryptography", but it really doesn't (and probably shouldn't).

@Hyolobrika@berserker.town Just being very aggressive and saying some pretty vile things, from what I've observed. The nice thing with the fediverse, as they say, is "birds of a feather flock together". So, it makes blocking out toxicity much easier. For example, I have poa.st blocked on this instance. I believe with Nostr it will be much more difficult.
