There is so much power in #OpenSource – not only in what gets built but in the way it gets built. In the communities that build it. There is power in working in public.

What that in mind, I started a #blog where I will show my work moving forward — the accomplishments, sure, but also the messy and failed stuff. Cuz that's where learning happens.

Codes of Conduct are a crucial tool to ensure we build safe, healthy, and inclusive communities in open source — here's an excellent opportunity to contribute to the body of knowledge surrounding them. The study findings will be used to "gain insights into current CoC usage, identify challenges, and suggest optimal practices."

This is probably the most exciting time to be an internet person, possibly since the 'net first blinked on.

How we experience the web is undergoing seismic shifts —#AI, #XR, and the #SocialWeb will make for increasingly personal and engaging experiences, softening the borders between our digital and physical worlds.

And how we build for the web is changing, too.

@blaine @kissane I'm curious why "part of the world' and "a safe place" are mutually exclusive? To be sure, there are plenty of unsafe places in the world, but there are people and institutions that have built safe spaces within it too. To me, the benefit of the fediverse is that you can be part of the world, and connect with anyone *and* also build a safe corner of the internet for yourself.

I understand why people are upset and concerned about #Threads joining the social web. Most of us have been burned, or considerably worse, by #Meta before.

Una is the creator of #Jortage, a communal storage pool for #Fediverse instances. The project helps admins here on #Mastodon and beyond keep costs down by pooling resources and de-duplicating content storage across the 70+ #instances that use it.

@asjmcguire I'm planning to write a wrap-up of the sessions I attended, but since there were multiple tracks going on, that won't be comprehensive of the whole day.

I'd be glad to collaborate with other @fediforum #FediForum attendees on something comprehensive!

Last week, #mastodon reached 10 million users (and is already a quarter of the way to another million)!

So I asked my friends here what they thought we needed to do or add to the #fediverse to keep scaling — to share this place with more people, to ensure that growth happens with intention, and to keep people safe.

"People join via their existing institution ID." < this is fascinating to me — it's an answer to concerns about ease-of-use, and also possibly verification. I sent this to Boris in another thread, I'm curious your thoughts on it too, Laurens... Have you seen California’s Digital ID project?

I'm imagining a system which verifies your identity against the digital ID database... Then would (in this case) California host a publicly accessible instance too? At first blush that seems like a stretch to me. Then again, our taxes pay for public infrastructure like roads and highways. Why not information superhighways too!

Whoa — #Mastodon passed 10 million users yesterday. According to @mastodonusercount, the number of hours people spend on here is increasing too. That's incredible.

It's a moment to celebrate and to get excited about the work we still have ahead scaling and securing the #fediverse.

I'm starting work on a blog about what it will take to get us to the next 10 million, and I'm curious about what my friends on here think about it. What do we need, in terms of tech or otherwise, to keep growing?

@bmann yes! @mozilla and @medium have instances, who else?

governments and cities... somehow, I feel like they'll be the last to the party. Have you seen any examples of such? the only location-based instances I've encountered so far are grassroots efforts from locals.

and completely agree on the tooling and systems... it will be interesting to see what springs up for the non-technical aspects of adminning an instance, like policy drafting, community management, etc.
