    • Mastodon Users

    Whoa — #Mastodon passed 10 million users yesterday. According to @mastodonusercount, the number of hours people spend on here is increasing too. That's incredible.

    It's a moment to celebrate and to get excited about the work we still have ahead scaling and securing the #fediverse.

    I'm starting work on a blog about what it will take to get us to the next 10 million, and I'm curious about what my friends on here think about it. What do we need, in terms of tech or otherwise, to keep growing?

      @haubles @bmann @mozilla @medium Flipboard and Vivaldi also have servers

      For cities, I think Amsterdam is the biggest city with their own servers that I know of. Obviously EU Voice is massive, as well as bund.de.

      Another very big project is with the Dutch higher education system, where they enable all Dutch universities to join the Mastodon server. Think 25 have signed up now in the roughly month since it launched. Did an interview with the PM on that here https://fediversereport.com/surf-program-manager-talks-about-their-mastodon-pilot-for-dutch-higher-education/

      @bmann yes! @mozilla and @medium have instances, who else?

      governments and cities... somehow, I feel like they'll be the last to the party. Have you seen any examples of such? the only location-based instances I've encountered so far are grassroots efforts from locals.

      and completely agree on the tooling and systems... it will be interesting to see what springs up for the non-technical aspects of adminning an instance, like policy drafting, community management, etc.

      @haubles normalize organizations, governments, cities and more to run their own servers — just like running your own website.

      Tooling and systems from managed hosting and more to support many more long tail organizations to do this safely and securely.

      @haubles @bmann yeah I agree that there's quite a lot of value in providing digital infrastructure. Think its too early currently, too much fedi software is missing for it currently. Also hard to overcome negative associations. But I think an implementation where gov sets up a server with local news, and allows you to pseudo anonymously comment if you're verified would totally work. Needs more infra first tho. Similar to dutch edu system, youre anon but verified part of system

      @bmann @fediversereport

      I'm imagining a system which verifies your identity against the digital ID database... Then would (in this case) California host a publicly accessible instance too? At first blush that seems like a stretch to me. Then again, our taxes pay for public infrastructure like roads and highways. Why not information superhighways too!

      "People join via their existing institution ID." < this is fascinating to me — it's an answer to concerns about ease-of-use, and also possibly verification. I sent this to Boris in another thread, I'm curious your thoughts on it too, Laurens... Have you seen California’s Digital ID project?

      @fediversereport more interesting to me is a long tail of small businesses running it for their own staff. EG the Internet Archive runs a Masto Server. (Vivaldi and Flipboard are the big ones for their users — which is great but a different category)

      And yes! Cities!
