Mastodon is looking at a couple of issues with YouTube links and this might be related. If you feel comfortable, would you be able to share on their GitHub (or we can on your behalf)?
Hello all! We've published our first piece on Mastodon Moderation. This first piece is about setting some context and expectations. In the next post we'll be covering the report feature, including screenshots for what is visible to users vs the moderation interface.
There are a lot of repeat offenders that appear on the FediBlock list over and over again - not just when they're rediscovered but also over time.
If you're moderating a server, you please check and see if the instance you're about to report to FediBlock exists on one or more Community blocklists:
If you find that you are rediscovering a lot of well known bad actors, it might be looking into checking out Community blocklists to see if any of them are a good fit for you.
You can review what's on the blocklist as well.
Hachyderm's blocklist is ~400 instances. We're looking at applying tags so we can get more nuanced data out of them.
That said, blocklists aren't the only solution to hateful online content. They are just one step that will help you learn from what others have found. 2/2
That said, we are working on a couple of blog posts right now, and explaining at least some of the tooling could be a fit for the piece, if people find it helpful. Our thinking thus far was that people would mostly find it a lot of information they don't use ever (like learning how to change a tire, never changing a tire, and then forgetting how to change a tire).
That all said, if people find it useful we can queue up a post about tools work.
We agree and have a lot of thoughts on moderation tooling and the things that we do to try and make it work regardless. As has been pointed out by others, essentially all Fedi instances (including ours) are volunteer driven and almost all software being developed in the Fedi space is likely also free.
In the past we've focused on "how you can help us" information:
@inthehands We just wanted to say thank you :hachyderm:
The moderation team works very hard and we appreciate you. We do our best to research harmful content before it reaches the server so that our users aren't exposed to it. We are always open to discuss our process to explain how we do things and how to make improvements.
If you've been Hachyderming recently, you've no doubt heard about or have seen the wave of spam that's hit the fedi. We've just finished applying a Mastodon patch that should reduce the overall noise, but as you see spam, please continue to report it. The mod & infra teams will continue to keep an eye out.
We will be using this thread for communication regarding this issue.
mastodon.social and mastodon.world administrators have confirmed with us that they've dealt with the spam issues, so we are now lifting the limitations on those instances. We will do the same for mastodon.online as soon as we get confirmation that they've also mitigated the issue.
We hope everyone had a great first full week of July! Below is a link to this month's moderator minutes where will cover: welcoming new users to Mastodon, volunteering with Hachyderm, decisions around Lemmy/kbin, and what’s going on with the Meta instance.
Joining in here: this analysis is exactly why have the criteria that an instance cannot monetize their own users without consent OR cannot monetize remote users without their consent.
To be clear, explicit consent is core to our ethos. Everyone involved must be able to consent, or we will need to defederate to protect our users' right and ability to consent (as well as anyone that same for anyone federating with us).
