      Gaza genocide denial
Gaza genocide denial has been ongoing since the beginning of the Gaza genocide and follows similar patterns as other cases of genocide denial. It includes literal denial, rejecting the facts of mass killings and other atrocities committed by Israeli forces; interpretive denial, disputing Israeli responsibility for the massive destruction; and implicatory denial, minimizing the political and moral implications of genocide. Common denial rhetoric includes ad hominem attacks against critics of Israel's genocide, asserting that the accusations are motivated by antisemitism or support for Hamas. Other frequent claims include downplaying Israeli violence and the death toll in Gaza, justifying Israel's actions in terms of self-defense or international humanitarian law, and arguing that Israel's relationship to the Holocaust means it is incapable of perpetrating genocide. Historian Taner Akçam has found a high degree of similarity between Armenian...

@youronlyone 1/2 I agree that it's internally up to ASEAN states to negotiate #ConflictResolution and #TransitionalJustice processes.

But the ABC is primarily intended at an AU audience, not ASEAN. Extermination of 20% of a population [2] is #genocide. *Western* media hiding this genocide by omission while emphasizing the #CambodianGenocide was a key example of quantitative evidence for the Western media #PropagandaModel [4][5].

      Propaganda model
The propaganda model is a conceptual model in political economy advanced by Edward S. Herman and Noam Chomsky to explain how propaganda and systemic biases function in corporate mass media. The model seeks to explain how populations are manipulated and how consent for economic, social, and political policies, both foreign and domestic, is "manufactured" in the public mind due to this propaganda. The theory posits that the way in which corporate media is structured (e.g. through advertising, concentration of media ownership or government sourcing) creates an inherent conflict of interest and therefore acts as propaganda for anti-democratic elements. First presented in their 1988 book Manufacturing Consent: The Political Economy of the Mass Media, the propaganda model views corporate media as businesses interested in the sale of a product—readers and audiences—to other businesses (advertisers) rather than the pursuit of quality journalism in service of the public. Describing the media's "societal purpose", Chomsky writes, "... the study of institutions and how they function must be scrupulously ignored, apart from fringe elements or a relatively obscure scholarly...

@youronlyone 2/2 The Wikipedia URLs were just background to anyone following. The fact that there are versions in 4 ASEAN langs is a positive sign of grassroots (non-state) cooperation.

Personally, I'm happy that Timor Leste is joining ASEAN. The EU +other Euro structures are themselves a messy, imperfect, unfinished process - overall positive IMHO, but including some ongoing #CrimesAgainstHumanity [6][7][8].

Seems like #ABC is into #GenocideDenial - "gained independence from Indonesia in 2002 after more than two decades of occupation" [1] - nothing about the #EastTimorGenocide [2]. #Reuters mentions *neither* the #IndonesianOccupation nor the genocide [3]. There just happened to be a referendum. Thanks to Reuters, Palestine has an easy way to freedom: hold a referendum! Easy peasy!

      East Timor genocide
The East Timor genocide refers to the campaign of systematic killings, repression and state terrorism against the East Timorese people by Indonesia's New Order regime between 1975 and 1999, during the invasion and subsequent occupation of East Timor. The Indonesian military framed their counter-insurgency operations as "pacification" and "anti-communist stabilisation" while operating with total impunity and engaging in a large-scale extermination of the East Timor's population, including mass killings, forced displacement, starvation, and the destruction of East Timor's social and political fabric. During the occupation period, the Indonesian government received diplomatic and military support from Australia and the United States. A significant body of scholarship has concluded that Indonesia perpetrated genocide in East Timor. According to the Oxford Bibliographies, "the majority of sources consider the Indonesian killings in East Timor to constitute genocide". Many scholars, including Ben Kiernan, who has documented the atrocities in detail, define the campaign as genocide. Other scholars, such as Ben Saul and David Lisson,...

"However, the school of the complainant could only provide minimal information - as it does not have any way to access information that rests with MS. No one felt able to comply with #GDPR rights."

"MS also tried to argue that in fact their EU subsidiary in IE is in charge of MS 365 products in Europe. The DSB rejected that argument and held that in fact MS US is making the relevant decisions."

@element @nemobis 5 MEUR/yr for 5 years sounds small on the EU scale. One possibility would be to convince one of the ERICs, arguing that EU-scale-FOSS-Synapse is crucial to EU research infrastructure [1]. Another would be to convince EOSC that EU-scale-FOSS-Synapse satisfies "seamless access" and #FAIR in supporting research and justifies a 25 MEUR/5 yrs budget [2].

The #RegisterOfDamageForUkraine #RD4U [1][2] is an excellent initiative. While Palestine and Israel are not in the #CouncilOfEurope , CoE states are implicated; it would be good to also set up #RD4P [3] + #RD4I [4], so that Palestinians + Israelis can be compensated by a future mechanism too. The database for #RD4P will have to be bigger e.g. 60 Tb for #RD4P vs 1 Tb for #RD4I.

      Register of Damage for Ukraine
The Register of Damage Caused by the Aggression of the Russian Federation against Ukraine, also called the Register of Damage for Ukraine or RD4U, is a register founded by the Council of Europe for Ukrainian individuals, businesses, and state and municipal entities to seek compensation for damages from the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The Register of Damage for Ukraine is an enlarged partial agreement, thereby allowing international cooperation between members and non-members within the framework of the Council of Europe. The Register is headquartered in The Hague, Netherlands, and has an office in Kyiv, Ukraine. On 2 April 2024, the Register opened to applications, and within the first 24 hours of opening, the office received over 100 online applications, anticipating an eventual 300,000 to 600,000 claims. As of April 2024, the Register of Damage for Ukraine only accepts claims regarding the damage or destruction of residential real estate. Other categories, such as injury or loss, will gradually become available throughout 2024. The Register is not intended to pay compensation for claims, but is instead...

@nemobis PL legal scholars seem to be unanimous that Chapter 66e of PL Criminal Procedure Law [4] would have to be followed. An international treaty is legally higher than a Cabinet resolution. Articles 611g–611s define the ICC cooperation procedures (Minister of Justice/prosecutor/detention/local court/transfer). The Min of Justice #AdamBodnar has a good reputation for independence and restoring the #RuleOfLaw is his main mission [5].

      Liberation of Auschwitz concentration camp
On 27 January 1945, Auschwitz—a Nazi concentration camp and extermination camp in occupied Poland where more than a million people were murdered as part of the Nazis' "Final Solution" to the Jewish question—was liberated by the Soviet Red Army during the Vistula–Oder Offensive. Although most of the prisoners had been forced onto a death march, about 7,000 had been left behind. The Soviet soldiers attempted to help the survivors and were shocked at the scale of Nazi crimes. The date is recognized as International Holocaust Remembrance Day. Background Between 1940 and 1945, about 1.3 million people (mostly Jews) were deported to Auschwitz by Nazi Germany; 1.1 million were murdered. In August 1944, there were more than 135,000 prisoners across the complex. In January 1945, after the Red Army launched the Vistula–Oder Offensive and approached the camp, almost 60,000 prisoners were forced to leave on a death march westward. Inmates were marched mostly to Loslau but also to Gleiwitz, where they were forced into Holocaust trains and transported to concentration camps in Germany. However, the liberation of the camp was not a specific...

It's true that "new role at Mastodon" is misleading - distinguishing Mastodon-the-network vs Mastodon gGmbH (DE) vs Mastodon Inc (US) is crucial for healthy decentralisation.

That sounds like you're refusing to give agency to an African woman judge. Are you sure that those are quite the right words?

Objectively, it was with Bensouda as prosecutor that the Palestine, Iraq and Afghanistan cases each progressed significantly (each in different ways).

Bringing the annual ICC budget [3] up to 1500 MEUR/year (factor of ten higher) would be cheap compared to the benefits: lawyers aren't cheap.

    @darnell

This is a side issue, but when there's a conversation between a human and a media team of humans, it's interesting to at least get some feeling for who might be "hiding" in the team. In the case of @EU_Commission my guess is the people here tagged 'social media':

are the team behind the @. The profile itself says nothing specific about who manages the messages, how their content is decided (e.g. on an internal wiki, on a cryptpad, or on a git repository).
