Key hypothesis more or less stated at today's #Decidim Association #bbb meeting [1]:

Hypothesis: Much of the power of the #TrumpMuskRegime + recently elected neo-fascist parties comes from #ImplicitFeudalism in online governance [2], related to the #TyrannyOfStructurelessness [3][4]. Exceptions in #FOSS are #Debian + #Wikipedia [2].

@debian has stopped using its Twitter account [1]. I like the comment from Andreas Tille [2]:

"I believe it is crucial for us to be the first major Linux distribution to move away from X, rather than the last to follow others. This is particularly important for #Debian to maintain its leadership in addressing ethical questions."

@element It would make sense to try coordinating with @edri for looking for EU-level or EU-national-member-level financing. The case for supporting matrix software development is strong, but administrative-political coordination is needed. EDRI should have some good ideas and practical knowledge.

@element @nemobis 5 MEUR/yr for 5 years sounds small on the EU scale. One possibility would be to convince one of the ERICs, arguing that EU-scale-FOSS-Synapse is crucial to EU research infrastructure [1]. Another would be to convince EOSC that EU-scale-FOSS-Synapse satisfies "seamless access" and #FAIR in supporting research and justifies a 25 MEUR/5 yrs budget [2].

The #RegisterOfDamageForUkraine #RD4U [1][2] is an excellent initiative. While Palestine and Israel are not in the #CouncilOfEurope , CoE states are implicated; it would be good to also set up #RD4P [3] + #RD4I [4], so that Palestinians + Israelis can be compensated by a future mechanism too. The database for #RD4P will have to be bigger e.g. 60 Tb for #RD4P vs 1 Tb for #RD4I.

      Register of Damage for Ukraine
The Register of Damage Caused by the Aggression of the Russian Federation against Ukraine, also called the Register of Damage for Ukraine or RD4U, is a register founded by the Council of Europe for Ukrainian individuals, businesses, and state and municipal entities to seek compensation for damages from the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The Register of Damage for Ukraine is an enlarged partial agreement, thereby allowing international cooperation between members and non-members within the framework of the Council of Europe. The Register is headquartered in The Hague, Netherlands, and has an office in Kyiv, Ukraine. On 2 April 2024, the Register opened to applications, and within the first 24 hours of opening, the office received over 100 online applications, anticipating an eventual 300,000 to 600,000 claims. As of April 2024, the Register of Damage for Ukraine only accepts claims regarding the damage or destruction of residential real estate. Other categories, such as injury or loss, will gradually become available throughout 2024. The Register is not intended to pay compensation for claims, but is instead...

@nemobis PL legal scholars seem to be unanimous that Chapter 66e of PL Criminal Procedure Law [4] would have to be followed. An international treaty is legally higher than a Cabinet resolution. Articles 611g–611s define the ICC cooperation procedures (Minister of Justice/prosecutor/detention/local court/transfer). The Min of Justice #AdamBodnar has a good reputation for independence and restoring the #RuleOfLaw is his main mission [5].

The Polish president is trying get govt agreement to allow #Netanyahu to visit PL on 27 Jan 2025 [1] for the 80th anniversary of the #LiberationOfAuschwitz [2] without being arrested; the govt made a formal resolution hinting it would allow the visit without an arrest - but without naming Netanyahu or stating immunity explicitly. The #ICC reminded PL of its legal obligations [3].

      Liberation of Auschwitz concentration camp
On 27 January 1945, Auschwitz—a Nazi concentration camp and extermination camp in occupied Poland where more than a million people were murdered as part of the Nazis' "Final Solution" to the Jewish question—was liberated by the Soviet Red Army during the Vistula–Oder Offensive. Although most of the prisoners had been forced onto a death march, about 7,000 had been left behind. The Soviet soldiers attempted to help the survivors and were shocked at the scale of Nazi crimes. The date is recognized as International Holocaust Remembrance Day. Background Between 1940 and 1945, about 1.3 million people (mostly Jews) were deported to Auschwitz by Nazi Germany; 1.1 million were murdered. In August 1944, there were more than 135,000 prisoners across the complex. In January 1945, after the Red Army launched the Vistula–Oder Offensive and approached the camp, almost 60,000 prisoners were forced to leave on a death march westward. Inmates were marched mostly to Loslau but also to Gleiwitz, where they were forced into Holocaust trains and transported to concentration camps in Germany. However, the liberation of the camp was not a specific...

It's true that "new role at Mastodon" is misleading - distinguishing Mastodon-the-network vs Mastodon gGmbH (DE) vs Mastodon Inc (US) is crucial for healthy decentralisation.

The givebutter page [1] really *does* say:

"... centrally operated out of the U.S., backed by venture capital"

Do people making donations earn shares in the #VentureCapital? Or are these just donations to empower billionaire investors to make them feel safe?

"But this was merely a symbolic measure."

That sounds like you're refusing to give agency to an African woman judge. Are you sure that those are quite the right words?

Objectively, it was with Bensouda as prosecutor that the Palestine, Iraq and Afghanistan cases each progressed significantly (each in different ways).

Bringing the annual ICC budget [3] up to 1500 MEUR/year (factor of ten higher) would be cheap compared to the benefits: lawyers aren't cheap.

This is a side issue, but when there's a conversation between a human and a media team of humans, it's interesting to at least get some feeling for who might be "hiding" in the team. In the case of @EU_Commission my guess is the people here tagged 'social media':

    https://commission.europa.eu/about-european-commission/contact/press-services/press-contacts/commissions-spokespersons-service_en

are the team behind the @. The profile itself says nothing specific about who manages the messages, how their content is decided (e.g. on an internal wiki, on a cryptpad, or on a git repository).

List of people indicted in the International Criminal Court
The list of people who have been indicted in the International Criminal Court includes all individuals who have been indicted on any counts of genocide, crimes against humanity, war crimes, aggression, or contempt of court in the International Criminal Court (ICC) pursuant to the Rome Statute. An individual is indicted when a Pre-Trial Chamber issues either an arrest warrant or a summons after it finds that "there are reasonable grounds to believe that the person has committed a crime within the jurisdiction of the Court". An arrest warrant is issued where it appears necessary "to ensure the person's appearance at trial, to ensure that the person does not obstruct or endanger the investigation or the court proceedings, or, where applicable, to prevent the person from continuing with the commission of that crime or a related crime which is within the jurisdiction of the Court and which arises out of the same circumstances". The Pre-Trial Chamber issues a summons if it is satisfied that a summons is sufficient to ensure the person's appearance. Overview The ICC has publicly indicted 52 people. Proceedings against 22 are ongoing:...
