PublicLewdnessFOSS firmware/BIOS updater "Fwupd" has been updated to version 1.9.6. This update fixes eleven bugs; adds support for eight new devices; and more. Fwupd is a piece of software that works with the Linux Vendor Firmware Service to give an easy way to update firmware and BIOS for various devices. The firmware and BIOS that the vendors offer isn't always FOSS but Fwupd itself is. The code is licensed using LGPLv2.1. Fwupd can be downloaded through various Linux distros as well as through Flathub as a flatpak.
I let glxgears run for 40 seconds and the FPS ranged from 165-191 FPS. I didn't use the "swap interval 0" part is it wouldn't run like that so I just used "glxgears".

PublicLewdnessI had another success with AMD GPUs on the libre kernel. I was able to confirm my Dell Vostro 1000 worked fully on Trisquel 11. On Trisquel 10 it gave an image but wasn't able to get full 3D acceleration. On Trisquel 11 it now works with full 3D acceleration. Some great times are occuring right now in my books. This laptop uses the ATI RS480 GPU for those interested. The more devices that people can get working with the libre kernel the more options people have for more privacy and security.
For me using FOSS options isn't about competing as much as having an option where privacy and security are valued. I have never used Telegram or Discord and I never will. No matter what feature they may have over a FOSS alternative they can't compete where it matters to me.
I'm not saying i'm disagreeing with you but I was responding to the notion that you can't have newer hardware. I was simply sayig that you can depending on what you're willing to give up. Everybody has different lines in the sand. One truth is that eventually hardware that works with old school Libreboot is not going to be able to be found. What then ? Even Power10 isn't going to be as open as Power9 which means even a Talos II isn't a secure option in the long term.
You can have newer hardware if you are willing to use Coreboot varients rather than old school Libreboot. Depends on if that's a deal breaker. Other option is a Talos II which will be $6000-10000.
I'm not saying they don't have the right, i'm saying I wouldn't pay it and choose a different program. That is my right as a consumer. I just see it as rife with potential issues. I donate over $1000/year to varjous programs, i'm not cheap I just don't trust easy. Not to mention if the program is FOSS they'd still have to provide source code that people could compile. They're really charging for binaries.
Donations I can get behind but not payments or subscriptions. I also wouldn't praise Elementry's app center as last time I tried it it had tons of paid apps but not even basic FOSS apps like Libre Office.
Starlabs is a good choice. Other good options are the Librem 14 by Purism as well as System76. If you can handle older hardware Vikings and Mini Free retrofit old Thinkpads to have Coreboot and use the ME Cleaner.
"Introduced in June 2006 in Intel’s 965 Express Chipset Family of (Graphics and) Memory Controller Hubs, or (G)MCHs, and the ICH8 I/O Controller Family, the Intel Management Engine (ME) is a separate computing environment physically located in the (G)MCH chip. In Q3 2009, the first generation of Intel Core i3/i5/i7 (Nehalem) CPUs and the 5 Series Chipset family of Platform Controller Hubs, or PCHs, brought a more tightly integrated ME (now at version 6.0) inside the PCH chip, which itself replaced the ICH. Thus, the ME is present on all Intel desktop, mobile (laptop), and server systems since mid 2006."

PublicLewdnessVikings has not only improved the base hardware that their refurbished Lenovo X200 laptop comes with but have lowered the price as well ! If you're looking for a privacy focussed laptop they're a good choice. Their X200 uses Libreboot for the BIOS so that means on top of an open source BIOS you get the Intel ME removed. It will also work with FLOSS distros and the libre kernel. Vikings offers a good amount of customizable options regarding storage; keyboard; battery; and more.
