    • Fedora Project (F43 is OUT)

    @shred

For cases like this, I highly recommend #Fedora users install the fedora-repos-archive package asap.

This allows someone to downgrade to the last previous update, which isn't always available otherwise.

You know things are getting extreme when iFixit.com puts together a #Linux installation guide.

In some ways, it's worse than that.

There was a USA Federal court trail on the Christian nationalist/Nazi movement and its particulars in the USA that occurred between the mid-1920's and the early 1940's. We have the report (https://archive.org/details/the-official-german-report) documenting that trial and what led to it..

So, even when the experience is local, it appears that folks can still follow it with success. But it seems no one has figured out how to counter such a movement. :(

The Official German Report by O. John Rogge
The Official German Report by Oetje John Rogge (1961)The book presents the material in my report of September 1946 to the Department of Justice, supplemented by items from the published volumes of a joint publication of our Department of State, the British Foreign Office, and the French government, Documents on German Foreign Policy 1918-1945, Series C (1933-1937), and Series D (1937-1945). I have added two concluding chapters to show the current and continuing relevance of this material.

We keep learning this lesson over and over and over, again and again. We don't need to dissect the German Nazi era to tell us that.

What we need that for is to figure a way to counter the playbook that era lays out for fascist movements.

As I think about this, my (possibly faulty) memory is that Hitler was appointed Reich Chancellor by then-German President von Hinderburg and not by any political coalition.

I do realize that this was a turbulent time in German politics, so I'm sure it was more politically nuanced than this 10th grade (USA) world history class view.

Some friends who are German have told me some of the aspects of its parliamentary elections. It made it sound very modern to me.

Am I misremembering things that neither the NAZI Party, nor Hitler, ever received a majority of votes in Germany prior to Hitler's appointment as Reich Chancellor?

Again, you seem to not understand that a majority requires more than 50%. Mr Trump did not receive more than 50% of votes cast in 2024, although he did get close.

Majority vs plurality is easy enough to look up. So are the vote totals.

And by "majority" you mean a plurality, and a narrow one at that?

Admittedly, it's not a much better story, but it is a little bit better... :(

Not to mention the successful recruitment to the "cause" of numerous Christian Nationalist groups, and "various Italian Fascist, White Russian, and Ukrainian
organizations." (That last bit is a quote from Rogge's book.)

I remember an awful lot of posts happening around the time the decision was made to default to the Wayland protocol for the f40 KDE spin.

I sure came away from those discussions understanding that, while Wayland would be the default, it would remain possible to install X11 and continue along as before with it, too. I was pretty sure that they hadn't banned it, just discontinued making it the default.

Are you saying that that's not true?

Yes, and after you do, I suggest reading the report, or, at a minimum, the Appendix to it, that the second "Sedition Trial" Special Prosecutor, O. John Rogge, produced following the case being dropped. There are patterns described and solutions proposed there that are relevant today.

@apps I sure wish you'd expand on this: Do you mean there are some apps with this capability, other than the web access means? On the latter, I do not see the general privacy target under settings.
