Why are they so needy these days? It never used to be a thing.

Tony Hoyle (tony@toot.hoyle.me.uk)'s status on Friday, 27-Sep-2024 07:32:16 JST Tony Hoyle @ptrc @wdormann It seems you can replace an existing known printer too, which makes invocation risk higher if you know the internal network config.
But it's just a bug.. another day at the office, install the update and move on. This dramatic '9.9 world ending' shit needs to stop.

Tony Hoyle (tony@toot.hoyle.me.uk)'s status on Thursday, 05-Sep-2024 19:44:37 JST Tony Hoyle @GossiTheDog It's always fascinated me that large networks take so long to deal with that stuff. My disaster recovery plan for such an event is to shut everything down and reimage/recover the backups.. obviously spend a bit of time first to find out how they got in but not *too* much because people gotta work.
Clearly there's a reason it takes that long, it's just outside my experience.

You want someone else to use your stuff? Release it properly. Documentation. An installer. Actual testing. Those kinds of things.
Otherwise it's just 'bits of code on github'.

368 million adds up to a hell of a lot.

Tony Hoyle (tony@toot.hoyle.me.uk)'s status on Friday, 21-Jun-2024 01:54:11 JST Tony Hoyle @evan I'm a hard no here..bad actors will just curate their feeds to have only posts that agree with them. The same reason review sites are essentially useless now.
You could post a poll and more or less dictate the result by filtering answers.. you might not do it, but plenty of people would.
Social media is an avenue for discussion.. I'd hate to lose that.

If you think the hostages are still alive under all that I've got a bridge to sell you. It was never about them, this is about erasing gaza.

Tony Hoyle (tony@toot.hoyle.me.uk)'s status on Friday, 16-Feb-2024 01:25:51 JST Tony Hoyle @chronohart @shiri @snarfed.org One thing that occurs to me is the bluesky TOS:
"By sharing User Content through Bluesky Social, you grant us permission to: <lots of stuff>"
An opt out bridge simply can't obey that.. they don't have rights to grant permission to mastodon posts they don't own. Opt in they can have a TOS with similar wording that says you agree to allow that stuff to happen.

It's also going to need insane amounts of bandwidth.. being a central pipe for potentially millions of messages is not cheap.Much better would have been a per mastodon instance relay, but this is the path they have chosen.

Tony Hoyle (tony@toot.hoyle.me.uk)'s status on Wednesday, 14-Feb-2024 05:05:27 JST Tony Hoyle @evan @oliphant @snarfed.org Bluesky has algorithms which grab accounts and suggest them.. I presume when it federates it'll be caching lists of users and pushing them onto timelines as it does now..except now with potentially access to the entire fediverse..
This gateway is presumably going to appear to bluesky to be a single mega instance with 14 milllion users on it.. madness ensues.
