The reason is probably not that it could'nt handle the requests but that it reached a concurrent connections limit.
Imo it is too low in the default apache config.

There is no privacy friendly way for the server to block a chat request as it would need to know your contact list, who is making the chat request and whether this is their first message or not.
And implementing this client side isn't user friendly as the other person wouldn't always immediately know whether they can start a chat with you or not because your phone could be offline.

@Ciantic @jwildeboer @AboutSignalNL You can just turn off the ability for people to find you via your phone number and share your username with people you want to be able to contact you.

@dale_price this is how EVERY contact permission prompt should look like, not only the iOS one.
And there should be an option to share fake data with the app for it to stop asking for this permission.

I just tried to follow @LALegault from my *mastodon.social* and it was stuck on "requesting approval". The follow didn't go through until she followed me back (which I had to accept manually, even though I have different settings). I tried the same for the admin account on newsie.social and it did go through immediately.
I tested your account too. And my follow from *mastodon.social* did go through (but not immediately; this is probably just federation)

@Gargron I have seen Mastodon instances that display the techcrunch link previews correctly but don't remember which one it was.

I tried testing it with Epiphany but it's buggy and still different than Safari.
