    In the Netherlands #Signal is at the top of app stores. Seems a critical mass has been reached and groups (families, communities of practice) are now willing to make the switch. Good!

      @jwildeboer it still makes me uneasy that it's a centralized service with servers located in the US. I'd very much prefer Matrix. But it's still much better than what most people use now, so yeah, a win.

      @Ciantic Go to Settings -> Privacy -> Phone Number and switch both options to "Nobody". In all my years using Signal I have maybe gotten 3-5 spammy requests. The last one some 2-3 years ago.

      @jwildeboer @AboutSignalNL Can't support Signal until it allows to block all messages or contact requests from non-contacts.

      Telegram has a similar 'feature', it's worst feature an instant messenger can have, constant spam requests if your phone number is known.

      @farshidhakimy then people could likely get unlimited cheap user IDs, because the requirement to have a phone number (costs money if blocked) would be gone.

      This is a hard problem.

      @Ciantic @jwildeboer @AboutSignalNL You can just turn off the ability for people to find you via your phone number and share your username with people you want to be able to contact you.

      @Ciantic @jwildeboer @AboutSignalNL
      There is no privacy friendly way for the server to block a chat request as it would need to know your contact list, who is making the chat request and whether this is their first message or not.
      And implementing this client side isn't user friendly as the other person wouldn't always immediately know whether they can start a chat with you or not because your phone could be offline.

      @jwildeboer That’s awesome!

      Here in Germany it may not yet be on that level, but I can already reach many friends via signal-desktop.

      @gumbario From a security and encryption perspective, Threema lags a lot compared to Signal, IMHO. Feel free to start your won thread on the advantages of Threema, but don't try to use my post to gain visibility to my followers to spread what I consider spam. @threemaapp

      @jwildeboer our family just made the switch FROM signal to Matrix - simply due to being able to own our own data, and not needing to use a phone number that ID's us to a centralized server. I know they now allow usernames though.

      @jwildeboer are you sure? Have to agree with @samuel about the centralised server problem. How do we know it's not backdoored? That said, I prefer xmpp to matrix and wish there were more bridges.

      @MPaola @jwildeboer here in Latinamerica people use WhatsApp for everything. Then there is an scandal with Meta, they install Signal or Telegram, forget about the scandal and go back to WhatsApp.

      As a friend says convenience is the most adictive drug.

      @rbonifaz @jwildeboer most people use WhatsApp here to manage both social life and business. I guess it's both concerns about privacy as Meta has become very quickly more invasive on the other platforms and a political gesture against zuckerberg

      Not good. It's like making people switch to WhatsApp 2. It will just make it evern harder to make them switch again once this "secure" messenger turns out to - surprise, surprise - spy on them also.
