@BeAware but I also saw you use the friends plugin or something so I take it some of the content then is just hidden behind that to prevent search engines and data mining etc?

@BeAware it doesn't seem to be about which country a server is in. With the Australian law, for example, they can fine you in your country (you as the owner/admin I guess) for not having those measures in place for users of that country (Australia).

So with these new law changes coming eventually to social media, including the need to verify ourselves with ID to prove our age - how does that look for #Mastodon and other #Fediverse social media? In particular the larger instances that have responsibility to its user base under their own countries laws?
I don’t think this would affect small private servers in any way, but I’m interested to know more…

@jwildeboer our family just made the switch FROM signal to Matrix - simply due to being able to own our own data, and not needing to use a phone number that ID's us to a centralized server. I know they now allow usernames though.

@dansup as well as donations for the main servers, I think we need to push more on the idea of "decentralization" and teaching people how easy to it to setup your own instances or smaller communities. This reduces cost on the larger servers also. I run Mastodon and Pixelfed for myself and family, for example.
