We’re totally fucked if judges can openly say they’re sentencing people who haven’t committed a crime simply for holding an opinion.

“…prosecutors folded defendants who were not alleged to have committed any act of violence into a case…”

“In Batten’s case, prosecutors relied on her black garb… in Soto’s, prosecutors argued that her black clothing and her operation of a small printing press … tied her to the conspiracy. Both received sentences of 50 years”

Tim Cook (paraphrased): “If in the coming days the president decides to ease up on the thing he’s doing (you know, the thing. The thing that’s not really important enough to mention here, but I guess you care about it or something), then I take full credit for asking him to do that. It was me. I saved America. But if he doesn’t, then oh well, at least I tried. Also, when he does the thing to you, take solace in the fact that I feel really really bad about it.”

A lot of the SwiftUI stuff that released and worked ok in iOS 18.0 was broken in later point releases. By 18.3 or so, many of that year’s SwiftUI features had gained visual/animation glitches, if they still worked at all. (looking at you, sidebar adaptable tab view! FB16443811 and FB16443879 showed up sometime around 18.1 I think, and still aren’t fixed)

If you think iOS 26 looks like it’s going to release in a bad state now (and it does), just wait six months or so!

@renchap @tchambers I don’t think there’s one answer, but a big step would be to stop sending web users to unfamiliar servers in the first place. When I’m using my own server’s web interface, links to content on other servers need to be handled in the web interface I’m already using instead of linking directly to the other server.

    https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/issues/22673

Maybe there’s some difficulty I’m not aware of, but somehow most native app clients manage to do this better than the masto web interface.

Somewhat related to that last boost, we really need to stop introducing the fediverse by saying it’s “like email”.

I don’t think most people have positive associations with email.
“You can email anyone on any email provider” is like 387th on anyone’s Mental List Of Characteristics Of Email and will not be what they think of when you say fedi is like email.

Even if they do think of that, all they’ll take from it is “it’s an unfriendly, uncontrolled space and you’ll get a lot of spam”

@nikitonsky Well… yeah? If the value is always at the exact center of the thumb, then the bounds of the thumb have to go past the end, and then you can’t tell the difference between 95-100% because the thumb hides where the end of the slider is

There might even be another solution here that doesn’t require any UI at all: by default, let apps access only the contacts where:

    1. both people have each other in their contacts,
    2. both have the app installed, and
    3. each already agreed to share their OWN info with that app.

Would prevent apps from spamming invites to people who don’t have the app, or getting the info of people who never consented to the app having it. Legitimate communication apps wouldn’t need to ask for contacts anymore.

For those tempted to argue about the impracticality of implementing my tongue-in-cheek mockup:

Imagine, instead of the silly alert message, a simple toggle in privacy settings “allow others who have me in their contacts to share my information with apps”

If it’s switched on, it flips a bit on a server that the other person’s OS can check, just like how it checks if you’ve set up iMessage etc.

The point wasn’t the UI, it’s that other people’s info shouldn’t be yours to give out to apps

Prototyping a Fediverse client for #AppleTV with a screensaver-like experience centered around hashtags, using #SwiftUI and #TootSDK. I'm amazed by how good some of the photo- and art-centric hashtags are for just picking a tag and watching images go by on the big screen
