@michaelgemar @petealexharris @jeffowski There was a conference in Edinburgh about 10 years ago on the subject of Who Owns Your Body?, that specifically wanted to examine issues around medically assisted dying, organ donation, that kind of thing.
There is also the question of compulsory conscription into the armed forces, and women still in our time face a lack of bodily autonomy in many different ways.

@HistoPol I think they were just trying to show the losers 😄
Ooooops.
@jeffowski @guncelawits Well, I can only speak for the western world, and mainly in-person shopping. It seems to bother men a lot less to order smaller sizes online, and GAP has always offered even XS, which is even to small for me.
I first became aware of this when "Marlboro" (yes, like the cigs) opened a menswear store and my bf (average size guy) was unable to buy anything there because they "didn't do small sizes".
Here is a typical example from Lidl: https://www.lidl.co.uk/p/livergy-men-s-hoodie/p10011275
@guncelawits @jeffowski Did you know that they don't sell menswear in size "small"? The sizes start at medium because apparently no man likes to think of himself as "small". Fragile masculinity or what!
@dansup Having great parents is rarer than people think.

I just heard that an amazing small organisation, a plumbing firm that helps people in need in the north of England, has been literally hounded off the birdsite by Tory trolls who think _helping people_ is "socialism". We can't go helping people for free, now can we? 🙄
But Twitter's loss is our gain, as Depher is now among us at @Depher - please give them a follow and your support.
@howtomuslim Hi there. I'm an atheist and I consider religion (all of them) to be divisive claptrap which is holding back humanity.
Mastodon is a secular space and not a place to be proselytising. Go sell your nonsense elsewhere.

When I signed up online, this box was ticked. I hated the "advanced" UI, so after a few days I went and unticked it. Not everyone gets that far, they just leave instead.
Masto wouldn't scare off so many people, if the simpler online interface was the default, instead of the "advanced" one.
Wouldn't it make more sense to let a new user start with the twitter/bluesky-similar layout, and then let them switch to the column version later, if they want?
Most people I know who immediately abandoned Masto didn't have the time or patience to discover you could switch it off in preferences. They just took one look and bailed.
@ryanhoulihan Being female is bloody expensive, period! Silly, short-lived clothes, silly impractical shoes, ridiculously expensive skin creams, multitudinous hair products and have you seen the price of make up lately?
As often as possible I buy basics like pullovers, base layers and outdoor clothing from menswear shops, because the same items cost at least a third more from women's stores.
@Mastodon Does it have translation support? It drives me crazy that Tusky doesn't have that ability.
@erlend @cstross Norway is still a monarchy though, Erland. That does not match up with socialism.
@cstross @erlend That's the model I was always taught. But having observed Sweden, Spain, Denmark, Norway and the UK's monarchies over the past 40 years, one thing has become very clear to me. Even if you have a neutered monarchy, it is discreetly always trying to wield more power. Sweden is the case I have watched most closely. When I moved there in the 1970s, Sweden considered itself "post-christian" and everyone assumed the monarchy was on its last legs. That slowly changed.
The two greatest challenges facing humanity right now are reversing climate change & halting the spread of fascism.
