The issue is: "Has this person let go of the hate that caused them to choose fascism in the first place? Have they made amends?"
If the answer is no, then my answer is no.
Eg: Farmers that suffered under Trump's 2016 trade policies, voted for him again in 2024, and are suffering under his immigration policies, and will suffer under his tariffs.
There are literal ICE raids going on right now, terrorizing people. Many of the people that voted for these ICE raids, are shocked that their prescription drug pricing just increased, and that their federal job offer just went away. They're sad that bad things happen to them personally, but they still want these horrific ICE raids and other ethnic cleansing policies to continue for others.
Don't be sinophobic. Don't be wrong. Don't be sinophobic and wrong at the same time.
No one who has studied and excelled at a competitive US grad school, or built software at a top tech company, believes the racist cope that Chinese born people can only copy and not create, or that Chinese born people are "only now" doing science.
You can't even type a sinophobic comment like that without using technology invented by Chinese born people.
"But some Chinese companies copy!" true. Some American companies do too. But we don't try to use that as evidence that Americans only copy. Because that would be silly.
They spend a higher proportion on green / renewables R&D than we do.
Their thesis: The world will need to get off of fossil fuels or face destruction. Therefore, affordable solar, affordable batteries, affordable cars and grid management, scaled grid storage, etc, are fledgling industries today that will become indispensable tomorrow. We should subsidize R&D today to a massive degree, so that our companies have a leg up in the global market from 2030 to 2050.
If this sounds like AOC's Green New deal, that's right.
My evergreen advice to Accessibility teams in tech ♥️ struggling to get their features prioritized, is to wrap every accessibility feature that they deliver in experiment flags, and measure revenue of that cohort of experiments against a holdback. If you are not already doing this, I promise you, you will be shocked.
🤔 Do I love accessibility because I'm a tender hearted DEI zealot? Or because I only care about making money charts go up and to the right? You decide! Either way we're fixing stuff.
One of my former colleagues is a former conservative and he posted it to FB outraged about it and all of his family and friends are jumping all over him about misinformation, misleading still images, defamation, leftist lies, etc. etc.
"I wonder how you would do if someone had a camera on you 24/7 willing to take anything out of context, hm??"
This is who they are now. Who a lot of them always were.
It depends on what you're training for, and what you're optimizing for. At my age, I'm optimizing for injury prevention. Training with a lower weight, keeps damage off of my tendons, and reduces rotator cuff injuries.
I'm trying to do as few super heavy reps as I can before 500 to minimize wear and tear injuries. But I'm also trying to do as many as I can, to give my tendons and ligaments a chance to adjust to the weight.
@mekkaokereke FWIW, I appear to have been quite wrong about this.
I posted it where some of my right-wing family could see it, and they're mostly writing it off as a fabrication of CNN and MSNBC, ignoring their own eyes.
I feel like Charlie Brown trying to kick a football.
@mekkaokereke There is undeniably a large sect of people who are exactly like you describe. This won't convince them.
The folks I think it would convince are the ones who don't really pay attention to politics other than what they hear other folks talking about around the water cooler. The ones who vote, not as an informed decision, but rather as a social function. The ones who feel left behind in life, but are too stupid or lazy to identify who exactly is leaving them behind.
People forget that nazis don't kill mostly Jewish people in the US. Nazis mostly kill Black people.
You haven't been walking down the street when a bunch of swastika tatted dudes jumped out of a truck and attacked you. I have.
I'm not "blind to the symbolism." I've just experienced the symbolism, the interpersonal violence, and the systemic policy violence. And I'm telling you that the systemic and policy violence is the worst.
I don't care if I'm openly threatened or covertly threatened. I care if I'm threatened.
I am not in any more danger because he did that. I would have hoped that I'm in less danger, because now it's out in the open... but it was out in the open before. Like I said, I could put a whole thread together of people doing nazi salutes at GOP and alt-right events over the past 8 years. I could post videos of people yelling "Seig Heil" at Trump's first inauguration celebration. I could remind people (again) that the alt-right was founded by an open white supremacist that wants to ethnically cleanse the United States and turn it into a whites only ethnostate.
Whether or not the people that do this make literal nazi salutes or not, is inconsequential relative to the fact that they are doing all this, and people are OK with it.
Our need to have cartoonishly obvious nazis as the bad guys, before we recognize what's going on, is a big part of the reason that we're in this mess.
It's politically impossible for a felon to get a visa to some countries, and yet Trump is going to visit those countries. 🙂🙃
It's politically impossible for people that make antisemitic statements to get visas to some countries, and yet past members of Trump's previous administration got those visas anyway. 🙂🙃
There's no country on Earth that would block Trump if he did what Elon did. As it is, they're not even going to ban Tesla sales and stop Elon from visiting.
