Chop wood. Carry water.

With so much happening in the world right now, I need to remember to do the things I can.

I have maintenance tasks each day and long term projects to bring to light. I have work to do on myself, even at this late point in my life.

Rather than worry about things I cannot control as they swirl around my head like angry bees, I need to focus.

Chop wood. Carry water.

I hope your wood has few splinters, your water doesn't spill #today

A new day. A new chance to succeed.

Yesterday's pressing tasks turned out to be not so important.

That's happened a lot lately.

Tasks I thought urgent turned out not to be.

The laundry is patient. I still have clean clothes.

The cooking will be better because I can pay attention to it the way it deserves.

Why did I think it so important that it all get done Right Now?

Habits of a lifetime. They stay with you, even when they're not needed.

I hope you can do what's really important #today

A new day. A new chance to succeed.

The morning reading holds a grain of hope. It talks about doing the small things. The things right in front of us every day.

Not the big things. Not the flashy things. The great things happen rarely but the small things add up.

Make the meals. Wash the clothes. Hug your kids. Do the work. Maybe plant a garden if only in your heart.

It won't be enough to "find the helpers" any more.

We'll have to be them.

The day I avoided the draft by enlisting in the US Coast Guard at 17. One month before my 18th birthday and a 2-digit lottery number that would have sent me to Vietnam.

The morning reading is about living close to the land and in tune with the seasons.

I grew up with a large garden. Subsistence level stuff.

To child-me, nothing about that was simple.

Plowing and planting. Endless days weeding in summer heat. Harvesting and storing.

Elder-me feels the draw even as I know I lack the skills and strength to do it.

But maybe I can do something simple. Perhaps plant a tomato or two.

I feel lighter today, missing the heavy drape of expectation weighing on my shoulders. The weight of obligation gone from my chest.

It's not like I don't have things to do today. Things I want to do.

I'll take a walk in the sunrise when the sun comes up.

I'll write a bit. Play a bit. Read a lot.

Okay. Play a lot.

Things I want to enjoy in the doing rather than the accomplishment.

By some measures, I'm old.

At 71, I'm aware that most of my life is behind me. That the numbered days ahead are few.

My regrets center on wishing I'd known better. Wishing I'd acted better.

I made some good choices, too. Did some hard things.

Mostly I credit luck.

I didn't always get caught acting out. Long shots sometimes paid off.

But my path brought me here. I can't help but wonder where it will take me next.

I hope you are lucky #today

The juggling of mind, body, and spirit continues into the new day.

I'll write a little, read a little, get some exercise, and play a bit.

My extra task today: Prepare my newsletter for overnight release.

Holiday over, I feel refreshed and ready to get back to to work.

So today - as usual - I plan to write a little, read a little, and get some exercise as I juggle mind, body, and spirit and slide back into the familiar rhythm with a fresh outlook and a tidy desk.

May #today bring you at least a modicum of satisfaction.

What's on my plate today?

I prefer to think of it as "a new helping of a familiar dish" rather than the "warmed leftovers from yesterday."

Yesterday I dropped a ball for the first time all year. Up till now, I've only bobbled a few, cheated a couple, but kept the juggle going.

Not so yesterday. Hard drop. Broke one of the chains.

But that was yesterday. Today I just pick it up and keep going because today is another chance to succeed. Day one of a new streak.

I hope #today brings you joy

Something different #today although not particularly new.

I go see the vampires this morning then meet with the wizard who will read the signs spelled out by my blood.

I still have to write a little, read a little, and get in some exercise, but I can't eat until they've done their work.
