I'm trying to move to using Nextcloud. To prepare for that I want to create a database of contacts I can import. I see Exel can be made into vcf files and imported. Can anything similar be done with a Libre Office spreadsheet? I'd rather not use Google contacts at all.
The fact that 'French political gridlock' is the mainstream news angle on the result isn't really about journalists being ideologically in favour of fascism.
It's simply that this angle is what the 'markets' take.
And 'the markets' is our name for the controllers of capital.
Something we should expect from Labour are improvements - but improvements that entrench power, not improvements that hand more power to social movements.
So we need to use any space we get from kicking out the far-right, at the same time as knowing that Labour will actively oppose this social movement activity because they want to concentrate power.
There's a lot of analysis today that places the french far-right in the context of the Second World War. I'd say the Algerian independence war is at least as crucial.
Le Pen as descendent of the colonials who killed a million Algerians and tried to stage a coup before being kicked out.
Don't do colonialism, kids. Just say no. You might think it's all cool and under liberal democratic control but you're fostering the men of violence and they will come for you and your institutions.
@hannu_ikonen Before 1936 Franco had been used by the Republican government to put down uprisings by coal miners in Asturias. I'm thinking any wider conflict in USA will also be preceded by smaller acts of major violence that set precedents and bring forward the professional military people willing to use war against their own citizens.
When I studied the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War something that struck me was how the military leaders launched their coup against an incredibly moderate liberal-left government that was planning some very timid reforms of church and land ownership.
The fascists managed to convince themselves that a slight change in their utter privilege was an existential threat. It feels like the far-right in the US is doing the same. Very basic capitalist reforms are seen as 'communism.'
With 87% of the votes counted it looks even worse for the Swedish far-right than the polls suggested. They're down almost two percentage points, and are behind the Greens. https://valresultat.svt.se/2024/
In my copy of the Swedish register of the nobility (1983) it lists the Nieroth family as one that was never admitted to the Swedish House of Lords, and which only survives overseas. https://mastodon.nu/@Loukas/112580647029314206
