@inthehands I sometimes say that software reifies particular ideas into code, because in code, it's a real measurable thing in the world, whereas before code, it was an idea that floated in the use and communication of the concept between people and their society.
Strong support for mitochondrial theory of fatigue and brain fog in Long COVID:
"At the cellular level, we saw that the mitochondria of the muscle, also known as the energy factories of the cell, function less well and that they produce less energy," says Rob Wüst, Assistant Professor at Department of Human Movement Sciences at the VU University. "So, the cause of the fatigue is really biological. The brain needs energy to think. Muscles need energy to move."
Trying to make an algorithm that can't infringe copyright makes about as much sense as trying to make a pen that can't infringe copyright.
Algorithms are capital expenditures, that is, they are owned property. They are tools, and it is inconsistent to treat them differently than other tools. I suspect that we aren't going to get there by saying "this algorithm can't violate copyright"; only through saying, "you, human: you can't make money violating copyright." https://mastodon.social/@baldur@toot.cafe/111669090452900073
The biggest laugh for me in the giant dust-up around OpenAI and Sam Altman this weekend is that everyone is running around talking about AGI and mentioning it in stories as if it's a real bright line thing that exists in the world, like the electric motor; not a fiction used as a narrative device in stories, like vampires.
@michael_w_busch@jknodlseder@sundogplanets If only there were a sufficiently well-resourced space agency that had regulatory oversight capabilities and could look ahead 30 years or so for the welfare of all humanity.
It looks like the GOP's defense of Trump will lean on the First Amendment, even though Jack Smith skillfully avoiding charging incitement. The argument goes that 45 had a protected right to say whatever he said on January 6th, 2021.
Andrew Weissmann, NBC legal analyst makes a good point here: you have a First Amendment right to go into a bank and say, "give me all your money," but it's also a crime.
@gerrymcgovern@breadandcircuses Data centers in 2022 were responsible for 1.0 to 1.3% of electricity, of which 0.4% was for cryptocurrency mining.
The rate of electricity growth for data centers from 2015 to 2022 was between 2.6 and 7.9%/year, although CO2 growth from data centers was lower than that.
@Miriamm This is atrocious. I guess they are hiding behind the "says he was elected" because the previous mayor claims he executed a coup reelection to hold on to power, but that excuses nothing in the headline. In the alleged play of events held by the old town council, our unnamed hero is an ex-mayor at least.
Crappy work. I wonder if they are letting AIs write headlines these days?
@SwiftOnSecurity I might end up trusting programmers more than computers.
Generative AI is trained on humanity's corpus. There's a lot of killer robot stories in there. SOMEONE's going to use the output of generative AI as an input to an action engine for robots someday.
I do believe that I will prefer when code monkeys think through use cases before the code gets committed.
