@CobaltVelvet thank you so very much for providing this instance for these many years. you have been prompt and forthcoming to my several queries and for that i am appreciative. i wish you all the best in thriving as well as surviving. be well. 🙏
@ivory i have turned off notification sounds and turned off all sound on my iPad, but tapping favorite on a toot makes a sound. how do i turn that off? thx for app
@gwynnion sad about the sidelining of Harris. i think the DNC leadership is misguided and out of touch with reality. (yeah my thinking is fuzzy on this)
@slowenough yeah, i can follow bluesky accounts; that bridge requires both parties to follow a bot account. so maybe the threads account has to do something. not all servers, for decent reasons, support bridging.
@gwynnion i agree with you. reading Zuboff earlier this year provided me with this thought about why we think the way we do about current politics (YMMV): Zuboff points out how hard it was for people to comprehend totalitarianism. I feel that here in the USA we are struggling to comprehend what is happening in politics and society. from Shoshana Zuboff Surveillance Capitalism notes p. 336 in the print edition:
[Carl] Friedrich was among the first scholars of totalitarianism to address this experience of improbability, writing in 1954 that "virtually no one before 1914 anticipated the course of development which has overtaken Western civilization since then... none of the outstanding scholars in history, law, and the social sciences discerned what was ahead... which culminated in totalitarianism. To this failure to foresee corresponds a difficulty in comprehending."
@gwynnion this seems spot on (as do many of your observations). it seems that many of the people with the power to lead and make changes act as if whatever is happening now will blow over. I don't believe that is true, but I am also dependent on aspects of the status quo.
@andrewdessler :snap: this is one of the more dis-heartening facts about the arena of climate action for me as a citizen. (Thanks for your climate and weather explanations and posts.)
@ACM I followed your instructions and adopted `mailroute.net` for my outgoing acm.org email. Last night my mail client displayed this message: 'Mail can't verify the identity of the server "imap.mailroute.net".' because 'mailroute.net Issued by: R3 Expired: Monday, May 27, 2024 at 19:30:05 Central Daylight Time @ "mailroute.net" certificate is expired' (the ball is in your court)
