"Republicans win because they hold their noses and vote for people like Trump."

They like Trump, they agree with Trump, and Trump and other Republicans do what they want no matter how evil and corrupt it is.

"Democrats lose because of purity tests and ideological disagreements."

Democrats don't do what Democratic voters want even when it's patently legal and based on evidence.

We can't even get Biden to agree genocide is bad.

You see how that's a problem, right?

But we get infinite attempts by Democrats to move right and pursue bipartisanship with the people who want half the country to die or be enslaved by one means or another.

You see how that's a problem, right?

You see how they don't seem to have our best interests at heart, right?

@gwynnion i agree with you. reading Zuboff earlier this year provided me with this thought about why we think the way we do about current politics (YMMV): Zuboff points out how hard it was for people to comprehend totalitarianism. I feel that here in the USA we are struggling to comprehend what is happening in politics and society. from Shoshana Zuboff Surveillance Capitalism notes p. 336 in the print edition:

[Carl] Friedrich was among the first scholars of totalitarianism to address this experience of improbability, writing in 1954 that "virtually no one before 1914 anticipated the course of development which has overtaken Western civilization since then... none of the outstanding scholars in history, law, and the social sciences discerned what was ahead... which culminated in totalitarianism. To this failure to foresee corresponds a difficulty in comprehending."

If everyone just held their noses and voted for Democrats no matter how bad they were -- well, we've been doing that for years and voting rights, abortion rights, trans rights, healthcare, rent, and other issues are just floating in limbo because nobody in power seems to care.

Healthcare happened, even though Lieberman killed the Public Option (whcih was a desaster). But mostly it was attacked by the extremists Right with their endless attempts to strike it down via courts. They did not succeed. In fact, not voting Dems because of not holding the nose about Dems pushes the things even farer away. The Left, the Greens, the Counter-Everything... they may indeed, now and then, succeed locally but not on a larger scale. Pushing then for the "perfect" instead of the "good" is why in Europe many centre-left parties struggle and the Right flourishes. It's not only foolish but willfully oblivious to history that the Left (etc.) refrains from participating when it's not going their way.

A few months back I wrote a note on Putin's megalomania. In short: it's a megalomania of care! The wounds of the ruler become identical with the wounds of his time. And because he already went through his wounds and survived he is now the most apt (in his opinion) to see and heal the wounds of his time. In fact, that he and his nation are brought together in these times via the corresponding wounds, that is where "fate" comes into play and makes his decisions independent of his personality and morals. And this is the door sill to step over into totalitarian slaughter regardless of the sacrifices and costs. My impression is that the same applies to the populace who brings him to power as well.
